Crackdown on Tier 3 taxis taking place across Merseyside

A POLICE campaign to stop taxi drivers from travelling into Merseyside from Tier 3 areas and identify uninsured or defective vehicles is taking place across Merseyside this weekend.

Last night, eight taxi drivers from areas including Bolton were issued with enforcement action, either defect notices or suspension of licenses.

The activity will continue tonight across Merseyside.

Superintendent Chris Gibson said: "We’re carrying out this action for three important reasons.

"Firstly, to stand alongside our local taxi community, who have already had to adjust to difficult conditions and of course taken a massive financial impact of restrictions we have all lived under.

"The last thing they need, is taxis from outside the area competing for their reduced trade.

"Secondly, the risk that drivers and indeed anyone travelling to Merseyside from Tier 3 and other areas is plain to see, and I want to be absolutely clear that we will not tolerate it.

"Although real progress has been made by the people of Merseyside, the threat of Coronavirus has not gone away for anyone and we simply cannot let our guard down, or allow any behaviour or travel which heightens the risk of infection within our communities.

"Thirdly, and regardless of where drivers are travelling from, our Roads Policing Unit continues to work tirelessly to identify any defective or unlicensed vehicles, which can cause huge risks for companies, drivers and their customers.

"I'd encourage all taxi drivers and operators to regularly check your vehicles, as the vast majority do.

"Keeping our roads safe for all road users is vital, and we know too well the devastation that serious collisions can and do cause.

"We will keep on doing all in our power to reduce this impact."

Interesting. :-k

Is it now the job of the Police to police cross border hiring?

And what of locally licensed drivers who live away from their place of work? Are the Police going to police them?

Indeed, that was immediately what I was thinking while reading the piece.

Certainly we're not ordinarily allowed to travel into another area here, but work/business is exempt, and as long as cab drivers are within the licensing laws then I don't see what business it is of police =;

Where does it say that on gov.uk

I read it as travel for non work is banned but travel for work still permitted

You are confusing the meaning of work! there is no point in lockdown the way they are working

A more detailed article with a few pictures.

Clearly these are Uber vehicles that are trying it on, but the Police are the criminal Police, not the moral Police. For that we have the church.

Clearly if a vehicle is unsafe or uninsured then it should be suspended until such times as those issues are sorted, but blanket stops based on the colour of the plate is a clear case of an out of control Police Force.

So a PHV is working cross-border as has been permitted under licensing law for years, either under the triple-lock rule, or the more recent Deregulation Act stuff.

Is there anything in the Covid rules to stop them driving from a Tier 3 area into a Tier 2 area?

The drives are coming out of areas that are on lockdown......they must not do that ....... that is for the police to enforce

But according to the Government, you can travel out of a Tier 3 area for work purposes:

Quote:
Travelling into or out of a Tier 3 alert level area

Avoid travelling outside your area, including for overnight stays, other than where necessary, such as:

for work
for education
to access voluntary, charitable or youth services
because of caring responsibilities
for moving home
to visit your support bubble
for a medical appointment or treatment

Where necessary, you can travel through other areas as part of a longer journey.
