It's that time of the month in Glasgow again

Cab driver in Glasgow LOSES private hire licence after speeding rap

https://www.glasgowtimes.co.uk/news/195 ... eding-rap/

A cab driver whose car was caught speeding in Glasgow before assaulting his wife and damaging her tooth nine months later has lost his private hire licence.

Bilal Ahmad was fined £220 and had his licence endorsed with six penalty points for refusing to disclose the driver’s details of a vehicle which was caught exceeding the speed limit on camera in September 2018.

In June 2019 he was convicted of domestic assault and required to carry out a community payback order of 100 hours unpaid work within 12 months.

Mr Ahmad was brought before the licensing committee on Wednesday morning to explain his actions.

He said: “I owned the car but I was not driving. I said this to police officers who came to my house.

“I then ended up with points on my licence because I didn’t give the name of the person driving. At that time I had some relatives over and they were driving the car as well which is why I was confused as to who was driving.”

Members of the licensing committee questioned Mr Ahmad’s decision to not disclose the information to the police.

Chairman, councillor Alex Wilson said: “You are saying someone was driving your vehicle, they went through a speed camera and the car was picked up speeding and you’re saying that you accepted at court six points and a fine for something you did not do.

“If you get another six points you will lose your licence. Why would you want to jeopardize your income? Why did you not just give over the details of who was driving?”

There was no clear answer to the question so Mr Wilson decided to ask the applicant about the domestic assault charge.

He said: “You have injured a member of your family, particularly a woman which I find particularly abhorrent. I don’t agree with any form of physical violence. What do you have to say about that?”

Mr Ahmad responded: “I accept that it was my fault, I had my punishment from the court and I have nothing to say to be honest. I was very ashamed of my actions.”

Following the meeting committee agreed to refuse Mr Ahmad a new licence.

Seems a bit far-fetched that someon else was driving his car but he didn't know who it was, so presumably the daftie was actually driving and thought it might work out better for him if he said it was someone else driving, but I suspect if he'd named himself he wouldn't have lost his badge.

If someone else genuinely was driving the car, presumably they came to a deal saying that he'd say he didn't know who was driving, because that person had more to lose than the PHD - maybe the other driver was on a ban, already disqualified or didn't even have a driving licence. Of course, the PHD may have been coerced into that in some way. But again if there genuinely was another driver I'd guess the calculation was that even if the PHD refused to name that other driver he'd keep the badge, but obviously that assumption proved incorrect :?

Also, kind of got the impression from the article that the car wasn't a plated vehicle, so to that degree it wasn't an unbadged driver scenario if someone else genuinely was driving it.

But I'd guess the true facts will never become known.
