Teenager killed and seven injured in serious crash in Tongham involving car and taxi

A teenager has died and seven have been injured following a serious crash in Tongham.

Surrey Police attended the two-vehicle collision in Oxenden Road, Tongham, which occurred just after 1am on Sunday (September 26).

A number of road closures were put in place while emergency services dealt with the incident.

The force says the teenage driver of a Volkswagen Polo was killed when the car collided head-on with a taxi travelling in the opposite direction.

The front seat passenger and six other passengers were taken to hospital - two of which suffered "serious injuries" and remain in hospital, as of 2.30pm on Sunday.

The taxi driver suffered minor injuries and was also taken to hospital. However, he was not carrying any passengers at the time.

Detective Sergeant Kani Barawi, who is dealing with the incident, said: "Our thoughts remain with the families of the boys involved in this tragic incident, which has left one teenager dead and two more in a serious condition in hospital.

"We are working hard to establish the circumstances of the crash and would appeal to anyone with any information to contact us straightaway."

Anyone with any information should contact Surrey Police by sending a message via its social media channels, quoting incident reference number PR/P21207382.

To report information anonymously, please call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111

In a Polo.

My understanding is the Polo was on the wrong side of the road, and the taxi driver was very lucky to avoid serious injuries.

Well done to the emergency services at the scene. =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

A bit more in the Mirror's piece.

Teen killed and two fighting for life after car carrying 8 crashed head-on into taxi

A teen driver carrying seven passengers was killed in a fatal collision with a taxi in the leafy village of Tongham, in Surrey this morning

A teen driver carrying seven people was killed and two others seriously injured after a head-on crash with a taxi.

The young driver of the Volkswagen Polo died and all seven passengers were taken to hospital, police investigating the case confirmed.

The front and back seat passengers remain in serious condition after the Polo smashed head-on into an oncoming taxi on the other side of the road in Tongham, a leafy village in Surrey.

The taxi driver - who was not carrying passengers at the time - sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital but later discharged.

Orange Taxis in Farnham confirmed with The Mirror it was one of their drivers involved in the collision and that he was not seriously injured.

Another driver passing the area said "kids" have been out today laying flower tributes at the scene of the incident.

Detective Sergeant Kani Barawi, who is dealing with the incident, said in a press release: “Our thoughts remain with the families of the boys involved in this tragic incident, which has left one teenager dead and two more in a serious condition in hospital.

"We are working hard to establish the circumstances of the crash and would appeal to anyone with any information to contact us straightaway.”

The detective confirmed with The Mirror the collision had taken place and asked for witnesses to get in touch with any information.

At present the police are not prepared to share any personal details about the motorist who died and his passengers.

A post mortem examination is to be carried out on the dead driver's body to ascertain the exact cause of his death and an inquest will be opened and adjourned later by the Surrey coroner.

Police were understood to be investigating why the Polo was carrying eight people and whether the number of people contributed to the crash.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: "We are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Tongham earlier today."

"The teenage driver of a Volkswagen Polo was sadly killed when the car collided head-on with a taxi travelling in the opposite direction in Oxenden Road just after 1am.

"The front seat passenger and six other passengers were taken to hospital. The front seat passenger and one of the back seat passengers suffered serious injuries and remain in hospital.

"The taxi driver suffered minor injuries and was also taken to hospital. He was not carrying any passengers at the time."

I should Imagine that the driver would have been crushed to death in an istant as the instantly released kinetic energy of half a ton of unrestrained human flesh and bone drove his chest through his seatbelt and down through the steering column.

No point in making driving tests harder when youngsters are getting stupider.

Not sure it's going to need Sherlock Holmes to sort that one out.

My understanding is that a large chunk of the taxi's front went into the taxi just missing the driver.

Thank the Lord for that.

Well I was wrong - seems most of the tributes were posted on Instagram :-|

Nice floral tribute, though. But I wonder how many flowers would have been left if he'd survived but the taxi driver had died?

Anyway, if you want to know the victim's name and see photos of him from Instagram, then you can find them here:

Lets be thankful the taxi driver survived many would say this is karma for trying to cram most of the team into a Polo

When you see the pictures and read what people say about the lad it's defo a very sad case.

But we all have to be responsible for our actions, both the fella who died and his mates in the car.

Maybe the family and his mates can spend the rest of their lives sharing with other youngsters their experiences and the effects this tragedy has had on them.
