I've no idea which firm is best for you, 450 miles away.

But £700 for a PH plate is a lot of money, and I'm not that sure justified. [-(

Personally I like working with a meter (which is one reason I don't fancy PH) because it works it all out for you, and can help avoid disputes with customers (eg if you agree a PH fare, but they then want to stop on the way, and hold you up for half an hour, then what do you charge - if you have a meter, then you just charge what's shown).

If I was you I would just start with the biggest firm (Festival City Cars or something like that?) and do what they do.

You can always move to another firm later if you don't like how they work.

What about the yellow pages?

www.yell.co.uk

Try searching for 'taxi' in 'Edinburgh'.

Some will be taxi firms mind, but most will probably be PH or similar.

the £700 is a one off payment when you put your car through the cab test for the first time and it can take up to 6wks to get a test date so dont start your (dare i say it!!!) TAXI insurance on the motor untill the day before the test as that will give you a few extra wks before you have to renew it the following year and the best bit is the test takes about 30Mins
thats the fee that CEC say is for admin, test and plate cost. when you need to renew you plate the cost is between £100-£150 if i rem right (been a long day  )

the test that PH companys set you is not that hard at all it just asks you things like where is X hotel etc etc etc but some companys dont ask you to sit one if you are the owner of the car its mostly for people who are looking for a drive.

best thing to do is phone the various companys and ask them what they charge for radio rent as they all have diff ways in dealing with this some ask you to pay up front each wk and then pay you your contract money at the end of the month others take the cash off your contracts each month and pay you whats left. also you are best finding out what they charge (if anything) to get a radio fitted as for a metter you will have to buy your own one as most companys dont supply them only the radio

hope this helps you
