Both the Daily Mail and Sun running with the 'hero driver' angle. This is the Sun's version below, but here's the Daily Mail link for anyone who'd prefer a different source:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... rance.html

This isn't the whole article below, but mainly the stuff about the Delta PHD. And according to the Daily Mail version he was discharged from hospital at 1830 yesterday evening, so the stuff below isn't quite up to speed in that regard.

Liverpool hospital explosion: Hero cabbie locks suspect in taxi before it explodes

A HERO taxi driver thwarted a Remembrance Day bomb tragedy by trapping a suspected terrorist in his cab.

Brave Dave Perry leapt from the car and locked the doors as the device exploded at Liverpool Women’s Hospital yesterday — killing only the male passenger who carried the bomb.

Last night, David was stable in hospital with burns and shrapnel injuries, including damage to his ear.

Billy Darwin was among those paying tribute last night, posting online: “DAVID PERRY The Liverpool HERO!!!!”

He added: “David nearly paid the ultimate price to save others, apparently not giving anything a second thought besides making sure he went above and beyond to keep the people of Our City safe!”

Stephen Thomas added: “The driver is my mate, and spotted the passenger acting suspiciously, so he jumped out the car.”

He went on: “This guy blew himself up, but my friend is OK. He sustained a few injuries, burns, burst eardrums and some shrapnel, but he’s OK.”

Jay Keats responded: “Your mate is a hero, locking the car too. Well done that man.”

However cabbie Kev Cuthbertson posted: “It’s my mate who got blown up. He’s in a bad, bad way.

“He’s a fellow driver on Delta. He’s had his ear sewn back on, got burns and shrapnel wounds and other pretty serious injuries. He is a hero. When he noticed the bomb, he locked the scumbag in the car. But took the brunt of the blast.”

Last night, an online fundraising page was set up to help David.

The organiser wrote: “His quick-thinking possibly saved a lot of lives.”

The car blew up in Liverpool at 10.59am, killing its “suspicious-looking” passenger as the country prepared to mark the Fallen at 11am.

Pals of the injured taxi driver, who was in a stable condition last night, said he acted courageously to thwart a bombing of the hospital, where 30 babies are born each day.

Three men aged 21, 26 and 29 were later arrested elsewhere in the city under the Terrorism Act.

The blast occurred close to the Liverpool Cathedral which was hosting one of the country’s largest Remembrance Sunday services with more than 2,000 people. It is less than a mile from the hospital.

One source said Mr Perry grew suspicious after the passenger asked him to drive to the cathedral, so stopped at Liverpool Women’s Hospital instead to raise the alarm.

Cops are exploring a theory the detonator in a device exploded while the main charge did not.

Last night, security expert Will Geddes, of International Corporate Protection, suggested IS could be behind the blast because of:

TARGET — IS has targeted several hospitals and medical facilities in Afghanistan recently.
TIMING — around 11am on Remembrance Sunday as the nation honoured its war dead.
CAUSE — Mr Geddes suspects it was a VBIED (vehicle-borne improvised explosive device) also associated with the fanatics.

Graphic pictures and videos captured the private hire taxi with smoke and flames billowing from it near the main entrance to Liverpool Women’s Hospital as horrified staff and patients looked on. Detectives had not last night declared the blast a terrorist attack. Security sources said “all options are on the table”, as a major investigation began.

Spooks were urgently trying to find out the identity of the dead passenger to establish if he had appeared on any intelligence-led lists of terror suspects.

Sources said that the next 24 hours would be critical, with experienced anti-terror detectives from Scotland Yard also being asked to lend their expertise.

Merseyside Police confirmed it had handed over the investigation to colleagues from the North West Counter-Terrorism unit, which regularly targets Islamist and far-right inspired terror suspects.

Some slightly different stuff in the Daily Mail:

Daily Mail wrote:
Hero Perry only needed stitches after the ordeal and is already home, a family friend told MailOnline, hours after police arrested three suspects and evacuated dozens of houses as part of a terror probe.

The source explained Perry was asked by the alleged bomber to go to Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral, but the passenger changed his mind because of road closures and requested a stop at the city's Women's Hospital.

As he pulled into the hospital, 'Perry noticed the man had some kind of light attached to his clothing and was messing around with it. He jumped out and locked the car.'

He received stitches to his ear, treatment for 'non-life threatening' cuts and bruises and was discharged at 6:30pm on Sunday.

Anyway, some good publicity for Delta for a change, and hugely well-deserved praise for the driver =D>

So the bomber ended up killing only himself. Karma, much? :-o

This is the page on the Daily Mail's website with the full video of the explosion.

There's also a link to a fundraising page for the driver, if anyone's interested.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... pital.html

But I'm sure an earlier version of the above article said that there are several fundraisers around, and that the driver's family are worried that people are sending money to unknown people who may be on the make, therefore...

(The MailOnline's page seems to have been amended to remove that warning, so maybe the linked fundraiser has been verified in some way.)

I think an article on the Mirror's website had said Delta refused to comment on whether the driver worked for them, but no one seems to be disputing that.

One of the counter terrorist operations focused on Rutland Avenue near Sefton Park, from where the Delta PHV was booked for the trip.

Which, of course, will be why Delta not commenting on the episode - police will have been all over them like a rash, and will have ordered them to say absolutely nothing :-#

This is the bit in the Echo about the fundraising pages, and how David Perry's family urged caution. But have included the link to the Facebook page as per the Echo, since it's presumably kosher:

Liverpool Echo wrote:
Jenny Phillips, who has set up a fundraising appeal for Mr Perry and his family, told the ECHO: "I run a Facebook page for taxi drivers and we got a sense something had happened on Sunday morning.

"We waited until we knew more details of what had happened and we were shocked.

"I have never heard of anything like this happening before.

"After speaking with a close friend of Dave's we talked about setting a fundraising page for him as this man has just lost his income and will need time to recover.

"His family have since been in touch and said there are a number of other fundraisers that have been set up but are not official and the family are concerned people will be giving money to people they do not know."

She added: "Our fundraiser has been well received. We are always there for our fellow drivers and wish Dave a fast recovery."

David Perry's wife posted this below on Facebook, and no doubt many will have heard or read about this, because it's been widely reported. For example in this Metro piece:

Taxi driver’s wife says it’s an ‘utter miracle’ he survived explosion

https://metro.co.uk/2021/11/15/liverpoo ... -15605724/

The wife of a cabbie who escaped a terrorist’s bomb blast with relatively minor injuries has said it was an ‘utter miracle’ that he is still alive.

Several outlets have also reported that David's car had a Covid screen, and that that may have saved his life. For example, this in the Times, although it's paywalled. But most of the reports seem based around Rachel Perry's Facebook post above.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see him making a few bob out of future 'exclusive' interviews and the like...

That did cross my mind.

Guessing it wasn't one of those cling film versions.

Bloody lucky the Screen didn't go through his mind. Last thing to go through the mind of a bug hitting a windscreen - its arse.

This is just about the fundraiser, and some interesting comments about the explosive device at the end. The rest of the article is mainly rehash, so haven't included that.

Suicide bomb hero cabbie's wife warns over fake crowdfunding efforts as one appeal she knows nothing about hits £30,000

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... 0&ito=1490

• David Perry stumbled from cab after device exploded on Remembrance Sunday
• Fundraisers have since been launched to help Mr Perry purchase a new vehicle
• But his wife, Rachel, has raised concerns over one fundraiser being a 'scam'
• GoFundMe said it is 'working with the organiser' to release funds to Mr Perry

The wife of hero taxi driver David Perry has issued a warning over allegedly fake crowdfunding efforts after one appeal she knew nothing about hit £30,000.

Mr Perry was seen stumbling away from his wrecked cab after Emad Jamil Al Swealmeen detonated a ball bearing device outside Liverpool Women's Hospital just before 11am on Remembrance Sunday.

Despite his injuries, he warned others to stay away as he staggered towards the hospital reception with his head in his hands. Half a minute later the car was engulfed in flames.

Fundraisers have since been launched to help Mr Perry, who survived with minor injuries, purchase a new car.

However, his wife Rachel has said she is not aware of one of the organisers' identity and is worried it could be a scam.

Rachel appeared to delete her Facebook post after she was contacted directly by GoFundMe, who reassured her that funds will be directly transferred to the family.

The crowdfunding platform had earlier said it was 'in full control' of the charitable interests and was working with organisers to release the funds to Mr Perry's relatives.

The fundraiser, said to be set up by 'the lads out the Saddle Kirkdale', writes in its description: 'This man is an absolute hero his quick thinking tonight possibly saved a lot of lives.'

It adds: 'Let's help him purchase a new vehicle and help him and his family get by during this terrible time while he recovers.'

Mrs Perry wrote on Facebook: 'Just want to put this out there for anyone concerned.

'Myself and David are not aware of who has set this GoFundMe page up. We have not been contacted by the organiser or anyone connected to the Saddle Pub and are worried this could be a scam.

'Please if anyone is concerned request a refund as we would absolutely hate for anyone to get scammed, especially In our name. Please share.

'Please note we are aware of the page set up by Jenny Phillips, who has been in touch with us - this is genuine. Thank you.'

A part-owner for the Saddle Pub in Kirkdale told MailOnline they 'know nothing about' the fundraiser.

And a spokesperson for GoFundMe said: 'It is not uncommon for people to set up a GoFundMe for someone else in these circumstances.

'We are in full control of the funds and they will only be released to David or his family with David's consent. We are currently working with the organiser to do this.'

Set up yesterday with a target of £20,000, donations have already reached £35,700 at the time of writing.

Meanwhile, the fundraiser set up by Jenny Phillips has reached over £27,000 of its £100,000 target.

[...]Nick Aldworth, a former counter-terrorism national co-ordinator, told BBC Radio 4's Today that from what he has seen there is 'very little blast damage' indicating that whatever was in the vehicle was 'low yield or didn't work properly, or possibly an incendiary'.

David Videcette, a former 7/7 counter-terror detective at Scotland Yard, said: 'The white smoke indicates the explosion was fuelled by some type of explosive, the fire then takes hold and the smoke changes colour as it consumes the car.

'Improvised Explosive Devices have various components, with each having to operate in the correct order. It's possible what we see here is a detonator explosion that has failed to set off the main charge.'[...]

Obviously a shedload of articles about the driver over the past few days. This was published today on the Echo's website, but despite the headline, can't see much new in here at all, other than the fact that the two fundraisers now total £70k, which is the 'major milestone' in the headline :-o

(Not clear why £70k is a 'major milestone'. Maybe £100k, or even £50k, but what's the significance of £70k? Unless every £10k is regarded as a 'major milestone' :? )

But no doubt everyone will have heard the counter-terror police theory that the driver suddenly coming to a stop caused the detonation.

So next time you think you have a suicide bomber in your car, just keep driving 8-[

Joking apart, what a dilemma that would present, eh?

I think the time has come for the fundraising to stop or any more money to go to the emergency services or the hospital.

What the fella did was brilliant, and I hope he manages to get back to work driving his own car. But let's all move on now.
