First Hackney Carriage fare rise in 12 years is approved

https://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/ ... -approved/

COUNCILLORS have agreed to allow the District's Hackney Carriages to charge passengers more per journey - the first price rise for the service in 12 years.

Rising costs of living, spiralling fuel prices and the introduction of the new Clean Air Zone next year were reasons given for the requested changes.

Unlike private hire vehicles, which can alter their prices any time, Hackney Carriage fares in Bradford can only be approved by Bradford Council.

The Hackney Carriage Owners and Drivers Association had requested fares be increased, and the issue went before Bradford Council's Regulatory and Appeals Committee on Thursday.

Members were told the last request for a fare rise was 12 years ago.

A report to members said: "The cost of living has increased significantly since the last increase, as has the cost of running and maintaining a Hackney Carriage Vehicle.

"Hackney Carriage vehicles work predominately from the Ranks in the City Centre or Towns within the Bradford District. Many of these Ranks are within the Clean Air Zone boundary and subsequently Hackney Carriage Proprietors are having to upgrade their vehicles to meet the requirements of the CAZ or be charged daily for crossing into the zone.

"Other increases impacting the key overheads to the running cost of a hackney carriage vehicle are Insurance and fuel price increases."

Currently a Tariff 1 journey (Monday to Saturday, 7am to 11pm) costs £2 for the first 97 metres and then 10p for each subsequent 97 metres. Under the approved changes, passengers will instead be charged 10p for every subsequent 88 metres.

A Tariff 2 journey (11pm to 7am Monday to Saturday and all day on Sunday/Bank Holidays) is currently 10p for every 87 metres. This will be changed to 10p for every 80 metres.

The fine for "fouling" a vehicle - which includes vomiting or leaving "excess dirt" in a Hackney Carriage, will remain at £50.

Interesting comment left on the website :roll:

I'm guessing this person below isn't the disinterested HC customer they're trying to portray themselves as, and I doubt if the HCs in Bradford are as smelling of roses as they seem to claim, nor that PHVs are as bad as they are saying:

Quote:
Not a big increase, compared to private hires recent one. This is far more justified because they are proper Taxis and feel more safer to transport my daughter when drunk , kids when out and my family in general.

Plus most drivers do not smell of weed or have cocaine bags on dashboard compartment like private hire youngsters. Drivers need to work with integrity and cleanliness.

All in all not a life changing rise, in general Hackney Carriage always come through, been using them 36 years our family has. Cheerio now

And in another post the commenter also says their first post had to be deleted - the mind boggles about what that might have said :shock:

To be fair, I've heard some of the PHDs on here smell of weed and have bags of cocaine on their dashboard all the time :lol:

Anyway, a minor point, but according to the PHTM tables the last rise was in 2010, so not quite 12 years ago, although maybe the increase doesn't take effect until next year :-k

And can't be bothered with the number crunching, but this latest rise seems very modest, particularly after a 12-year gap...

But I'd forgotten about the feature on the PHTM tables that provides a list of councils by the year of the last tariff increase. This is the 2010 one, including Bradford:

And there are still a handful which haven't seen a rise since 2008. I'm sure Pendle's £4.40 for the two mile runs was OK back then, but, I mean...

Currently;

1 mile £3.60 for the first mile then about £1.65 for each subsequent mile.

Proposed;

1 mile £3.80 for the first mile then about £1.82 for each subsequent mile.

And for the record I'm not a mathematical whizz, it's just that I have a great excel fares spreadsheet. :D

Thanks. I just quickly looked at the 10p tick-up yardage.

On T1 the yardage reduces from 97 to 88 metres.

On T2 it reduces from 87 metres to 80.

So obviously not the biggest of increases.

(Of course, strictly speaking it's not 'yardage', because the increments are in meters, but I think 'yardage' is better understood that 'metreage'.)

The last time I did a job at £1.65 or less was about 1997.
