like I said, if the council decides then so be it. However where the council has made a knee jerk reaction, as in this case, and not consulted the stakeholders, ( you do know what a stakeholder is??), then its not correct, and they should be afforded the opportunity to be heard.

I'm intrigued in what you say about consultation. Could it be the fact that you confuse consultation with negotiation? Are you aware of the time table of events in Swindon or do you base your information on the final outcome of the decision to remove numbers control.

How would you feel if I told you that since January 2005 representations had been made from all the relevant quarters of the Swindon Taxi trade, right up until the Full Council decision of 20/7/05.

In January 2005 the following representations were received.

Representations from Mr John Mcoogin regional Industrial organiser of the TGWU, In response to the Swindon Hackney carriage working party Report.

Representations from Mr Keith Radway of the Swindon Black cab co ltd, the largest owner of hackney cabs in Swindon

H/C owners Petition signed by 29 people on 16th May

Similar signed petition on 26th May

Letter from Mr A P Johnson, also signed by Mr Paul Beare, Mr Amer Butt, and Mr Keith Radway.

16th May 2005 Private hire hackney carriage sub committee. Addressed by Mr Radway.

I'm afraid these replies show the extent to which the Swindon Trade was consulted. Their representations were duly noted and every consideration was given to their responses at three separate stages of the Councils democratic process. The fact their decision doesn't sit well with you, or perhaps those who made representations against the new council decision is unfortunate for yourself but I'm afraid that’s what happens when you suggest councils are best placed to determine their own policy.

If anyone in Swindon is contemplating legal action against this council decision then I hope they have deep pockets. I also hope they realise there is a time limit on such appeals and their chances of getting an appeal out of time in this respect is pretty slim. Especially considering the council have done absolutely nothing wrong in law.

I suppose some were under the impression you were debating from an informed view. However it would appear you know nothing at all about the background to the events in Swindon, only that they lifted numbers control and I suppose if it weren't for me posting that information on this website yesterday you wouldn't even know that?

Your ideology seems to be at odds with your view "that councils know best".

actually matey, i knew all about it, i feel sorry for the drivers that signed the petition, i know all about the letters from the TGWU, the licensing officer was ill advised, but ultimatley if the council knows best, then i will stand by thier decision.

p.s. are you actually a taxi driver? because i dont think you are, you see if you were, you would understand that an area only has so much business, and if over capacity occurred .... actually forget it, vive la Fraternity!

The licensing officer presented factual information which countered the misinformation supplied by some of those who sent in responses to the councils consultation. You have no doubt read these responses so you should know exactly to which responses I am refering.

I am more than aware of the economics involved but what you fail to realise and you have just demonstrated it so eloquently is that although there may only be so much business available "you, I or anyone else do not have the exclusive rights to that business. I am afraid that my friend, is what your ideology is all about. "Exclusivity".

The anticipated legal challenge to Swindon's decision to remove numbers never materialised and yesterday Swindon officially became one of the many new councils who have in place a policy of Quality control rather than quantity control.

It will take a bit longer than a day, but the world WILL end for swindon, and when it it is too late to do anything about it. Pandora's box has been officially opened in Swindon.

Just for the record, could you please tell me in which one of the 71.4% of councils that don't restrict has the world ended? :-k

Funny that... I was in Peterborough today, there must have been 30 hacks on the rank, no unmet demand there then...
