Don't really know if this merits a new Plymouth thread, but not really sure which of the others to put it on

And not sure if there's anything particularly new here in terms of complaints, or whether maybe a bit of politicking and posturing from the council.

Or maybe it's just because the Plymouth Herald thinks it an appropriate time to put this on its website


Plymouth taxi drivers 'refusing to take people to outer parts of the city'

If you've been let down by a Plymouth taxi driver then the council wants to know about it - but it urged that 'the vast majority look after their customers and make sure they get home safely'

Having approved a cabbie policy for the future and made plans to ensure they are all decked out in traditional Plymouth colours of green and white, council chiefs are now asking the public to tell them about bad taxi drivers.

Last month Plymouth City Council confirmed the future of the city's cabs would be cleaner and literally greener as part of its new licensing policy. The policy will see cabs given a makeover with green and white livery and, as of May 1 a number of other measures will come in including no limit on the number of hackney carriages, drivers being allowed to return to the trade within three years without having to complete the knowledge test, contactless payments by July 2022 and a staggered approach to introducing cleaning vehicles by 2030.

New hackney cab drivers will have to learn the map of city streets, but other private hire cabbies will not have to do the 'knowledge' test following a misprint blunder got voted through by councillors.

Meanwhile, in an effort to ensure Plymouth's taxis were the very best around, the city council appears to be urging the public to offer their own 'trip advisor'-style reviews about cabbies.

Posting on its Facebook page, Plymouth City Council asked if people felt they had been "let down by a taxi driver in Plymouth we can do something about it - but you need to take down details so we can investigate."

The council statement went on: "The vast majority of our licensed taxi drivers look after their customers and make sure they get home safely. They are all vetted, enhanced DBS checked, have had safeguarding and ambassador training, for instance.

"Unfortunately we've received some complaints about drivers refusing to take customers to outer parts of the city, overcharging and some hackney carriage drivers not using their meter.

"We've also had reports of drivers refusing multiple drops within the city boundaries. This is not on and we will not hesitate to take formal action against these drivers.

"However, we can only take action if we have some basic details:

• the vehicle registration number OR

• the licence plate number – these are at the back of the vehicle and are white for a hackney carriage and yellow for a private hire vehicle.

• Private Hire vehicles also have the plate number on their doors

• Hackney Carriage vehicles also have the plate number on the partition between the driver and the passenger."

These can be some of the most lucrative jobs, so why would drivers refuse?

Not really because I'm not that f******g stupid.

What usually happens is the first person gives a tenner, the second one a tenner, and the third a tenner.

The job goes £28 and the last one actually wants the change back.
