Only becomes clear near the end that the meters have been fitted to PHVs - I thought initially it was one of these small, oddball counicils that didn't insist on HCs fitting meters (assuming any still don't insist, an I'm not sure what the precise law is in that regard).

There's also another odd angle from the legal side, as explained below, but anyone who knows the trade will notice it anyway.

There's a BBC news report video on the website, but it doesn't explain the HC/PHV thing either.

Mablethorpe taxi company abused by passengers for introducing meters

The meters were installed to help cope with rising maintenance costs

A taxi firm in Mablethorpe is condemning the abuse of its staff by angry customers who are frustrated at rising fare costs brought on by the introduction of taximeters.

A1 Taxis in Mablethorpe installed meters to its eight vehicles at the start of April, in a bid to cope with the rising cost of living and business survival, as inflation hit 7% this month, compared to 1.5% in April 2021.

This, on top of the soaring prices of fuel and tyres so far this year, has left the firm with little to no alternative but to adjust its prices, given how much it costs to run and maintain its eight vehicles.

The company used to offer standard fares of £3.50, but the new meters now start at £3.40, with customers now likely to pay between 40p and £2 more.

The move has been criticised by some in the community, and it has sadly resulted in a spate of abuse aimed at the staff, according to the taxi firm.

Rhett Levett is a driver for A1 Taxis, and he said that customers have swore at him, refused to pay for taxis, and there’s even been an instance of someone spitting at an operator.

The abuse reached a point that saw the firm take strike action, only doing pre-booked journeys over the weekend of Friday, April 22, and they say there could be no weekend trips again if the abuse continues.

Rhett told BBC Look North: “You’re trying to provide people with a service and this is your thanks for that service, abuse for taking them home safely.”

A1 Taxis also took to social media to shut down accusations that the introduction of the meters were illegal, stating clearly that the move had been approved by the council and was “completely” in line with regulations.

The business posted to say: “I would just like to reassure all customers that what we have done with the taxi meters in our private hire cars is completely legal, despite rumours stating otherwise.

“We made sure it was allowed before we took this into consideration, I have had conformation from East Lindsey District Council’s license office, and this paragraph is also from the taxi driver license book.

“A hire car is not required to fit a taximeter, but if such a meter is fitted, it must be correctly calibrated, tested for accuracy and approved. Section 71, LG(MP)A.”

So if it's all about fitting meters to PHVs, they can't stop doing public hire jobs, as this seems to imply the strike is all about, because they can only do pre-booked jobs anyway?

Predictably, the circle can be squared by the fact that it looks like the office is mixed HC and PHV, although that's certainly not explained at all in the article above.

And even reading the posts on A1's Facebook page, you have to go back a few posts about the meters to find the relevant one, which states:

Over a month ago, A1 Taxis wrote:
Hello to all our lovely customers, with the rising cost of electricity, fuel and vehicle repair bills, we have come to the decision to have meters fitted in all of our cars, wether they are Hackney or private hire, they will all be turned on and in use for every fare from the 1st of April 2022,

Until then meter fares are from midnight to 6am Sunday to Thursday and 1am Friday & Saturday.
We believe that at this time this is the best course of action, and we hope you can all understand our reasoning.

If you have any questions about this please feel free to send me a message on here or give us a call.
We thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you all soon.

Regards and best wishes to everyone

So looks like they're using the council tariff on both HCs and PHVs.

you have to remember Mablethorpe isn't exactly upmarket it's a place people with naff all money retire to and live in a caravan

not a lot there other than a few slot machine arcades and cheesy holiday "pubs/clubs" so a lot more cost conscious clientele busier in the summer when the council estates of Nottingham, Leicester, Sheffield et al. arrive en masse along the Lincolnshire coast having paid a fortune to shoehorn 6 into a caravan they expect everything else to be Cheap

Gosh, that’s harsh. But true…
