The Auriga CT4000 is meant to do this.

Not sure if it is out there working yet.

This solution will mean double costs though. Cos you will pay for PMR and £7.50ish a month for GPRS.

Why would it be £7.50ish a month when ur main form of depatch would be from ur pmr or does it not make a difference how much gprs time u buy or use?

That would be dependent on the deal you are offered.

Companies that offer GPRS will recommend a deal they have negotiated with a wholesaler.

I am sure Auriga are capable of negotiating a similar deal. But the proof of the pudding will be to ask them. I can't see a monthly contract, with data bundle attached being offered for much less.

If you have 200 cars then cost tends not to be the be all and end all. Still you have to consider if £1500 a month is an extra worth having if only a fraction of your work falls outside the coverage of PMR especially given that every driver these days owns a mobile.

Here’s a question that I should know the answer to but don’t.

With GPRS, I can understand that dishing a few jobs out doesn’t use up much bandwidth but how does the system deal with passing real time driver information?? For example, our system updates each mobile every time one car moves from one zone to another. Wouldn't this mean that the GPRS mobile would have to be permanently downloading such info and wouldn't that rack up the bandwidth usage??? From my experience, passing regular driver updates to all cars accounts for the majority of our airtime and I just wonder how the other systems get around this?

In the past, we did some joint work with another company involved with GPRS dispatching and the amount of bandwidth used per mobile was always a limiting factor for them in holding down the charges, which incidentally were four times higher than those talked about here. When we suggested that driver status information needed to be real time they said they would have to go away and look how this could be done. Never did find out hence my question.

Bill :)

Would a faster system be the answer here Bill. Orange are about to release their EDGE system here in the UK. Not sure what the running costs will be though. :)

No he's referring to keeping the bandwidth cost down.

EDGE will only provide an enhancement near to the base antennas where there is sufficient signal-to-noise ratio to enhance CS3/CS4.

It's perhaps a little too early to judge that yet, surely!

Motoroa seems to be getting in on the act quite early though, which could be good. Lowering operating costs certainly seems to be high on their agenda. :)
