A few weeks ago my wife's photocard driving licence was expiring. Filled in the form online and the new licence arrived in 4 days. Last week she got a form to fill in because she is 70 in November and has to renew her licence again. Again filled out the online form and the new one was back in 3 days. I wonder where all the delays I keep reading about are happening?

I doubt all applications are renewals and that might be where the delays are ?

You did it on-line, so probably zero human input needed or very little, so probably nice and quick.

Whereas doing it the old fashioned way of using the post is where there seems to be delays.

With it being so quick and simple to do online why would anyone do it by post?

My driving license took less than a week online. The wife’s passport took less than a week.

If your wife does renew her driving licence online, on her 70th she will not be able to drive a 16 seat minibus or tow anything unless you make a paper application. As I haven’t towed anything for over forty years, it was no loss to me. I gained in the minibus thing because I no longer have to drive the pub minibus for away games. =D>

As my wife has all but retired from work, she just covers emergencies and she stopped driving minibuses about 5 years ago, she has let her bus licence go.
