Liverpool obviously the biggie here, so below is Uber's usual Local Cab boilerplate in the Echo.

Village Taxis has 200+ cars, according to its website. So not the biggest player on Merseyside, but a big enough operation to give Uber a further toehold in Liverpool

But according to TaxiPoint, Uber has also announced Local Cab tie-ups with:

Brownhills Cars - Walsall, Lichfield and Cannock

Mill Hill Taxis - Blackburn

CamCab - Cambridge

Budget Cars - High Wycombe

Ideal Cars - Nottingham and the Ashfield District.

Those using the Uber app will be given an extra option

Uber customers in Liverpool will soon be able to order taxis in a completely different way.

The transportation company has today announced the launch of Local Cab in the city, which gives passengers the option to book trips with a local taxi operator via the Uber app. Anyone using Uber in Liverpool can select the Local Cab option, alongside regular Uber-operated options such as UberX and UberXL.

Local Cab trips will be delivered by operators from Village Taxis to fulfil, with all subsequent support provided by them.

The arrival of Local Cab in Liverpool follows previous launches in over 60 locations across the UK, including Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham.

Sarah Hunter, Director at Village Taxis, said: “We’re proud to bring Local Cab to the people of Liverpool. This provides another way for customers to book with us – and for anyone visiting Liverpool that already uses the Uber app, Local Cab will make it easy for them to book a ride with a local operator.”

Andrew Brem, General Manager at Uber UK, said: “Liverpool is one of a growing number of towns and cities in England where riders can access both UberX and Local Cab in the same app. This will help maximise earnings opportunities for drivers while giving passengers in Liverpool more choice, meaning that everyone will benefit. We’re looking forward to extending Local Cab in more UK towns and cities soon."

This sort of comment on the Echo's website was quite common a few years ago, but I thought everyone was up to speed on this now. But could be a competitor just trying to smear them.


To be fair, though, when corrected by other contributors, the commenter has acknowledged their mistake.

Anyway, I suspect Uber a bit like Veezu here, and effectively expanding by taking advantage of weaker operators in the carnage caused by Covid. Obviously not weak enough to go under, or require a takeover, but maybe weak enough to think that getting work via Uber will help them.

But a trojan horse, in my opinion

I’m still not sure the point of Uber cuckooing in a place like Liverpool.

They must have 100s of cars there already, I suspect some already working with that firm.

But bearing in mind Uber are trying to increase non Uber fares by 20% country wide, ones has to wonder if those firms are led by utter f***wits.

Uber local is about reducing their liability for vat as they are supplying work to the local firm on a commission only basis so VAT on the commission not the whole fare

this is the change in their business model they spoke about in their press release about the VAT settlement

The 1st operator which I would believe to be Uber is responsible for the contract to be fulfilled and as such will surely still be responsible for the vat to be paid on the fare.

if a farmer sells his produce through a supermarket is it not the supermarket that would account for VAT
