Another one for the seatbelt archives :-|

Some slightly odd details here, though. Sounds like the perp didn't want to go very far, and to that extent the seatbelt thing seems a tad over the top for a simple refusal - no sign of a robbery, or suchlike.

And then the driver carried on working :-s

And photo suggests it wasn't city centre as the pubs chuck out, or anything like that.

Suspect there may be more to this than disclosed in the article below 8-[

On the other hand, looks like it happened just half an hour into the new year, so that could be a factor.

Police are appealing for information after a taxi driver was attacked while waiting for a client on New Year’s Day.

Officers rushed to the scene in Crook Lane, Winsford, at around 12.30am on Sunday, January 1, following reports of an assault.

The Fowles Transport driver reported the attacker got into the back of his private hire car and asked to be taken to the end of the road, but when he refused as he was already booked, the man attacked him.

During the attack, the taxi driver had his own seatbelt pulled tight around his neck before the offender fled the scene.

There were suggestions the man had been armed with a knife, but police confirmed there had been no reference to a blade being used in the attack.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses to come forward, as well as anyone who might have information about the incident.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "At around 12.30am on Sunday, January 1, police were called to reports of an incident on Crook Lane, Wharton.

"The caller reported an unknown man had got into their taxi, a white Dacia Logan, and pulled their seatbelt, making it tight on their neck. There was no reference to a knife being used during the incident.

"The man then ran off in an unknown direction. He was described as a white man, with black hair and glasses. He was wearing a black fleece and jeans.

"Officers were dispatched to Crook Lane and arrived in under 10 minutes, however the taxi driver had left the scene to attend another job.

Mark Fowles, owner of Fowles Transport, the taxi company the driver was working for, said: "It’s a total lack of respect for the way me and my staff make a living.

"All the driver was trying to do is get the public back home, and that’s the disgusting part of it.

"It’s not fair, a driver being assaulted. This shouldn’t be a dangerous job.

"Nobody, in any business, should ever go to work thinking that they are at risk of harm."

Anyone with any information in relation to the incident is asked to contact cheshire.police.uk/tell-us, or call 101, quoting IML 1446741.

The business name 'Fowles Transport' makes it sound like it might have minibuses or buses and the like, but actually looks like a fairly standard small scale private hire operation.

Have a look at the photos here, though - very prominent rear, front and side plates :-o

(I'd call the doorsign a plate rather than just a normal 'Advance Bookings Only' sort of sticker.)
