Nothing out of the ordinary here, although the figures right at the end look a bit suspect :?

Cost of a taxi ride set to go up in Blackpool

Taxi fares could be set to rise in Blackpool with drivers seeking an average increase of almost nine per cent as they face higher costs to stay on the road.

If the council agrees, the move would see the cost of a five mile cab journey increase by £1.20.

The Blackpool Licensed Taxi Operators Association (BLTOA) also wants to add £10 to cleaning charges, taking the cost to £50 for passengers who throw up in taxis.

BLTOA, which represents hackney drivers who drive the black cabs which can be flagged down, says maintenance, fuel and insurance costs have all risen for drivers who last had a fare increase in September 2021.

The council’s public protection sub-committee is due to consider the request at its meeting on Tuesday January 17, with a report saying: “The trading standards and licensing manager does not consider the proposals to be unreasonable in the present economic climate.”

Proposals also include bringing forward more expensive night time charges by an hour, to start at 8pm instead of 9pm, and introducing a 90p fee for carrying bicycles.

BLTOA secretary Bill Lewtas said: “Taxi operating costs have grown considerably over the last 12 months. Fylde and Wyre taxis are more expensive than Blackpool taxis, and that will also apply after the fare increase, if it is approved.”

A statement by BLTOA to the committee adds: “If you were to calculate Blackpool taxi fare increases over a 10-year period and then divide by 10, the average percentage increase is very low indeed.

“We believe these measures will help to assist the shortage of drivers. For some time now there have been complaints that there are insufficient drivers, especially late at night and in the early hours of the morning.

“We very much hope that the council can support this and encourage the PPC (public protection sub-committee) to vote in favour of it.”

The proposed rises would see the fare for a five mile journey increase to £13 from £11.80 (6am to 9pm); to £16 from £14.80 (9pm to midnight); and to £16.60 from £15.40 (midnight to 6am).

BLTOA says vehicle maintenance costs have risen by between 20 per cent and 90 per cent, insurance has risen by up to 25 per cent, and the cost of a 10-year-old black cab is now up to £12,000 compared to £3,000 12 months ago dependent on mileage.

Ah, so with all these extra drivers, individually they could all be no better off? Or even worse off if you factor in the watering down of the driver qualification? :-o

Eh? I thought that was the age at which they're now lying in fields :?

Or is BLTOA alluding to cabs just within the Euro 6 spec, which will obviously have gone up in price?

But if the earlier reference to the clearly outlier 90 per cent increase in maintenance costs is anything to go by, then the purchase cost figures must be taken with a pinch of salt as well [-(

(And it's presumably not the cost of buying the one in the photo, which was surely taken some time ago...)

If that picture is recent the car is 25 years old.

At least 3-4years old as that footbridge over the road at the top of the picture was removed around 2019.

Also appears to be pre May 2017. Google street view history has the 'Savers' shop as 'Herons food' after that date. The only older image is from 2009 which shows it as 'Savers''

According to the MoT database, P78 RUC hasn't been MOTd since 2017, so it's presumably no more.

And HCV plate number 311 shows an 09 Vito on the council's licensing register.

Had a look at some of the older HCs on the council's register, and most of the older ones (around 2006/2007 or so) are actually saloons, funnily enough.

And a few of them seem to be Toyota Avensises...

And Blackpool's licensing register must be out of date, because a few of the older ones are shown as MoT expired on the MoT database, which generally means they've been scrapped.

I didn't check the licensing details of any of the Donkey Drivers and Donkey Proprietors, though

Does Blackpool give new HC Plates to saloon cars?

2013 Survey reported 256 Hackney carriages with 180 being wheelchair accessible so 76 Saloons.
Latest Taxi&Ph monthly reports 108 Wheelchair accessible & 144 other taxis?

A five mile cab journey increase of £1.20 is not going to increase driver numbers.

Pure fantasy land.

I do think vehicle prices both new and used will come down significantly in 2023 due to high interest rates and other problems.

That should help a little although I assume not much.

Not in the trade anymore but my guess is a lot are struggling out there.

As you say there is a lot of money (Government Levelling Up and some private) being spent. A lot of the levelling up money is on local government projects re-locating jobs, although moving the courts then unlocks the existing site for private investment.

The problem Blackpool has now is that it is mainly short stays. Long gone are the days when family came for 7 days. Its now day trips or a couple of nights. Its just to easy to get here now with the motorways and train. Cars now so reliable you would be happy doing a 3hr motorway drive in the smallest engine car. Imagine doing a day out trip from Sheffield to Blackpool in the '70s in a British Leyland car  Now 2-2.5hrs each way is no problem. Leave at 8am in Blackpool by 10:30, leave at 6, back home by 8:30pm

Some hotels are making the investment. A few years back a couple of adjacent hotels down the South end of town on the Promenade closed. These were bought by Hampton by Hilton and demolished with part of the site rebuilt and the remainder a car park (2018 - 130 rooms). They have now extended the hotel (opening very soon) over the car park with an additional 74 rooms. Not the prettiest looking of buildings, but I bet the rooms are better than any of the other hotels on the Promenade.

Lots of work going on, will it make any difference? not sure.

Tramway extension from North Pier down Talbot Road to Blackpool North train station. This will be the first time since about '63 that the trams will run on a route other than on the Promenade. although it is only about 1/4mile long. Apparently cost about £20m. Should be up and running (test runs have been made) later this year when the hotel being built on the site has been completed. I've not spoken to any locals that think it is a good idea. The council seem to think that people are going to flood of the trains (and walk past the Taxi rank) through an under pass to the tram station to get on a tram (when it arrives) and apparently don't have any luggage storage on the trams. The trams will then go either north or south on the prom as normal.

Town centre office area

Phase 1 already done a few years ago opposite Blackpool North train station. Big Sainsbury's store and office building that houses the general council office workers. The public facing council jobs are still carried out down the road near North pier. Had space for shops on the ground floor of the new council building, some still vacant I think.

Phase 2 is just starting by the Sainsburys and council offices. 7 floor office building. This is gong to be occupied by 3000 Department for Work and Pensions staff who are being relocated from another site in town. This move should happen in 2025, but they have recently been told by the current site owners they need to leave this year. So they are going to have to relocate over a couple of the local government sites before going to the new site in the town centre when ever that completes.

They are also creating a Multiversity in this area. I have no idea what a Multiversity is, but assume it is something to do with Blackpool and Fylde College. Both of these developments involves buying up lots of properties.

Winter Gardens Recently completed extension to the Winter Gardens complex that incorporates more modern conference and exhibition facilities.

Sands Venue This is the site to the left of the taxis in the original article. It was the site of the Palace nightclub (and other shops/pubs) during the '80/90s. It was then the Sands venue which was like a show bar for a few years. Its been partially knocked down and then rebuilt and will be a hotel. Its all black steal work and dark tinted windows. The building looks complete, with the Wild West Gril and Spyglass wine bar being open on the ground floor on the Promenade side. But it has all gone quiet on the hotel side of things.

Old central Station site This is about 200yds behind where the taxis are. Its the site of the old massive Central train station, that the council closed in 1964 (over-riding Beeching who wanted to close Blackpool North). Since then its been car park and site of the main Police station (recently relocated to near the M55 junction) and the Magistrates Courts. The Courts are awaiting to be relocated to just outside the town centre, although this site is currently the temporary ambulance station while there normal station is nearing completion of a rebuild. The central station will be redeveloped as a year round entertainment complex with hotels bars, entertainment complex, multi story car park (last one on this site had to be demolished as it was unsafe). https://blackpoolcentral.com/. Personally I would like to have seen a 10k capacity arena built. Something that could be used multiple times a week for shows and concerts, but that would be seen as competition for events at the Tower, Winter Gardens, Grand Theatre. We can do stuff to around 2k capacity but nothing more. This project was announced in 2017/18?, the first diggers were on site late '22 to start on the car park.

I have been following some of it on you tube "walk on the wild side" but haven't visited since my Nan died I think day trippers were very common on Saturdays with their kiss me quick hats  fortunately I used to get off the train at layton. I do still have a cousin who lives there but haven't seen her for nearly 35 years but always take a passing interest as it was my mothers home town.

There's another good account to follow on youtube called 'AdventureMe'. He's done some great behind the scenes tours of the Pleasure Beach, Winter Gardens, Tower, Grand Theatre and well as general stuff about the history of Blackpool and one of his recent ones has been about the old Central train station I mentioned above.

He's done videos on quite a few areas of the country, but they all seem to be history, railways/infrastructure, roller-coasters, amusements
