Or is it the case that "jockies" are happy with their lot? (I was).

So you were so happy as a jockey that you just had to get a plate

And then deny others the same choice

Just heard of a case in edinburgh, with one of our foremost companies, where an owner demands a deal of a 50/50 split with the driver paying the fuel.

Are you saying that a rental is better for the driver than a split? I always thought the split was regarded as better for the driver, but I suppose it depends on the level of the rental.

In St Andrews most drivers are on 40% and the owner pays all the bills.

In Dundee I think 50/50 is more commonplace but the fuel comes out of the bag before the split so the owner and driver split the fuel costs.

down here most rent.
usually 180-220 a week days or nights.
those that split it usually 50/50 with the owner paying for everthing.
including petrol.

So find a proper job.

By the way jimbo, I'll remember that remark the next time you moan about restricted numbers.

I don't remember EVER moaning about restricted numbers.

The point being, a driver enters into a voluntary agreement with an owner. They know the terms and conditions from day one, and have no cause for complaint if they accept the said terms and conditions.

I would estimate that after expenses, my average takings would not allow me to pay myself the minimum wage. Quite clearly, I could not pay a driver the minimum wage, so I do not employ one, nor do I rent, for similar reasons. Why do you take such exception to the rental market anyway? There is a huge cab rental market in London, where any GBC can own their own vehicle, is there not?

I think you knew what I meant Jimbo.

OK, I'll be more precise - the next time you complain about the concept of no restriction on taxi numbers, I'll say that you (or others) should find a proper job.

I hope that clarifies things?

So you disagree with things like the minimum wage then?

Well that's the point surely? If owners who do hire drivers had to provide reasonable terms and conditions then they would employ a lot less of them, which would raise everyone's earnings.

Well it's not a black and white scenario - if I lease a car from the Taxi Centre to work the ranks then it would be ridiculous to suggest that the TC employs me.

On the other hand, if a driver works for ABC Taxis, and they make him wear a uniform, decide his hours of work etc then I think there's a good argument for saying that he's working as an employee, even if he's actually renting or working on a commission basis.

These are extremes, and clearly there are a multitude of scenarios inbetween.

Hang on a bit you , i am not having a go , but you buy a cab and plate maintain it insure it . After all that you only make the minimum, wage likely story, unless your other halfs got a proper job . I would think you were stupid ,but quite clearly your not, the reverse . The reason why working as a Jockey is tantamount to slavery, is lots of drivers ,like myself are ill educated living in a city with of mass unemployment .A fact that owners are only to willing and adept at exploiting . Agreements between owners and drivers yeh right . We do not all live in rosy Lincoln . There is very little choice , you ether drive a cab or drive a cab . There is nothing else . It must be easy sitting in Lincoln pontificating on the virtues of taxi quotas . Why is your plate only worth 5,000 ? does not make sense . Its strange people get there own plate and start thinking there better than every one else. Even start voting coservative .Go on tell !your not on the minimum wage are you? . Jimbo .If you are ,i think you should start looking for another job .a proper one streetcars .
