Further suspect in court accused of robbing taxi driver of his car and contents in Wallsend

A second suspect has appeared in court accused of robbing a taxi driver of his car and its contents.

Robert Wardle was in the dock following the suspected robbery in Wallsend in December 2021. It's alleged that the 30-year-old and his co-accused, Nathan Waugh, stole the victim's car and its contents, including cash, the value of which was unknown.

Waugh, of Marshall Wallis Road, in South Shields, was in Newcastle Magistrates' Court to face one count of robbery last week. No pleas were taken and he was released on unconditional bail to next appear at Newcastle Crown Court on June 7.

On Wednesday, Wardle, of High Street East, Wallsend, appeared in the same dock to face the same charge. Again, because of the seriousness of the allegation, no pleas were taken and Wardle spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address during the brief hearing.

Rob Lawson, prosecuting, told the court the suspected robbery took place on December 2, 2021 at Charlotte Street, in Wallsend, and the alleged victim was a taxi driver. Mr Lawson added: "The Crown would invite you to send this case to the crown court."

District Judge Paul Currer told Wardle: "You're facing an allegation of robbery, which can only be heard at the crown court, so I'm not going to ask you for a plea. There is another man, your co-accused, who has already been dealt with and is appearing at the crown court on June 7 and you will appear at Newcastle Crown Court then too.

"You must attend on that date and time. If you don't attend, you could face another charge of absconding, so make sure you do. The court is in this building, just the floor above. I'm releasing you on unconditional bail."

Maybe new evidence or the police knew who they wanted but couldn't find them.
