Taxi driver murder trial told victim had heart disease

https://www.expressandstar.com/news/cri ... t-disease/

A taxi driver who was allegedly attacked by a passenger was suffering from significant heart disease, a jury has heard.

Anakh Singh, 59, died after being brutally assaulted next to his taxi in Nine Elms Lane, Park Village, in Wolverhampton, in broad daylight on October 30 last year, allegedly over a £5.80 fare.

Giving evidence for the prosecution Home Office pathologist Dr Alexander Kolar said Mr Singh had been suffering from significant heart disease.

The expert witness also told the jury at Wolverhampton Crown Court that the father-of-two showed signs of "significant" injuries to his abdomen.

Under cross-examination by defence counsel Mr David Nathan KC the pathologist said: "He had a pattern of very significant heart disease. He has lived with that for a very long time.

"It may be multi-factorial. If the court agrees it could be the stress of the incident or the blood loss."

Mr Nathan had asked whether he could be sure what impact the condition and the victim's injuries had on the outcome.

Dr Kolar replied: "The body doesn't work like an on/off switch. This man has significant injuries to his abdomen and very brisk blood loss. The reduction in circulation volume clearly would factor on top of it.

"He is going to be prime for going into cardiac arrest.

"Without the abdominal injuries this man has very significant illness. They are going to play a role. If you take away the heart disease this man would still have died. Put these two processes together, they are both important causes of this man's death," he added.

Trial judge Michael Chambers KC told Mr Nathan that the witness had answered the question and it was for the jury to decide on the points made.

Mr Singh had been working for the city's ABC Cars at the time of the incident. The jury previously heard the pair exchanged blows prior to the driver collapsing.

He died from his injuries at the scene after being allegedly assaulted during a row with defendant Tomasz Margol, 36, of Bamford Road, in Merridale.

Margol denies murder. The trial continues.

Very significant evidence IMO.

Man accused of murdering Wolverhampton taxi driver 'did not want to hurt him'

The man accused of murdering popular Wolverhampton taxi driver Amraht Singh has denied he meant him any harm.

Tomasz Margol took the stand at Wolverhampton Crown Court and blamed the taxi driver for their fight which led to the tragedy.

Speaking through an interpreter, Margol claimed that when he entered the taxi on Nine Elms Road, Park Village, on Sunday, October 30, the fare had already been paid on the ABC taxi firm's website.

He said: "I got into the taxi and the driver said I had to pay up front, but I said it had already been paid by card.

"He said it had not so I told him to refresh his app. He began shouting at me in his own language. He was very aggressive. He gently pushed me to get out of the taxi."

Margol added: "I got out the car. He came at me, he was shouting. I told him to 'go away' and 'p*** off' but he kept shouting in his own language. I was backing off."

The defendant was shown video of the fight which led to the death of the father of two shortly after.

When asked by defence counsel Mr David Nathan KC if he had meant to do Mr Singh any harm, Margol replied: "No I did not."

He said: "I felt anxious, but I did not want to show that I was scared. So I stood in a stance to show I was ready. He was hitting me with his bangle. It hurt my head.

"He was shouting all the time in his own language and was very aggressive. I wanted to show him my power. I wanted to play with him. I headbutted him."

The CCTV footage showed Mr Singh, 59, getting a metal grate from his boot and approaching Margol with it in front of the car.

Margol said: "I wanted to go back in the house. He began hitting me with the metal grate. It hurt me. I kept on telling him to 'go away'.

The CCTV footage showed Margol getting the better of Mr Singh and getting him on the ground and punching him twice.

Shortly after Mr Singh died.

The taxi driver suffered from heart disease and Home Office pathologist Dr Alexander Kolar previously said Mr Singh was a "prime candidate for cardiac arrest."

Margol, 36, of Bamford Road, in Merridale, Wolverhampton, denies murder.

The trial continues.

Wolverhampton man guilty of killing taxi driver in row over fare

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-b ... m-65979074

A man has been found guilty of manslaughter after police said he punched, kicked and headbutted a taxi driver in a dispute over a fare.

Anakh Singh was found collapsed in Nine Elms Lane, in Wolverhampton on 30 October and died at the scene.

He had picked up Tomasz Margol, 36, before the pair got into an argument over the method of payment for the journey, West Midlands Police said.

The force said this escalated into a "sickening assault" on Mr Singh.

Margol of Bamford Road, Wolverhampton, was cleared of murder, but found guilty of manslaughter at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Wednesday.

He is due to be sentenced on 11 July.

Mr Singh's family described him as a "well-respected member of the community" and added "this loss has left us heartbroken and has forever changed our lives".

Police said Margol was arrested on the same day as the attack, after he was identified on CCTV.

When he was arrested, the force said he told officers: "It's about what happened today... about the beating."

Det Insp Michelle Thurgood said: "This was a senseless and tragic act of violence.

"Mr Singh was a law-abiding man of good character who was simply trying to do his job."

Must have forgot to read this one, because hadn't realised he was convicted of manslaughter rather than murder.

So echoes of the culpable homicide charge that the killer of the Dundee driver is facing. No point going into the fine details of the difference between murder and manslaughter, or the difference between manslaughter under English criminal law and culpable homicide under Scots criminal law.

But, roughly speaking, manslaughter and culpable homicide means there was a less obvious intent to kill.

Anyway, he's got ten years:

I hope the family and friends of Mr Singh take some consolation in the 10-year sentence.

And my views on the scumbag that killed him I will keep offline.
