Not much to see here, so don't really know why I bothered, but had almost completed this post before I realised there wasn't much in it

But this is the official police news release rather than any press rehash.

And don't want to be over-pedantic (as usual  ), but can never help noticing when stuff like this says that it 'ensures' public safety. Er, well, it doesn't, but to be fair, although it states that in both the headline and strapline, the sergeant's statement is a bit more accurate - it *helps* ensure safety.

And also the usual blather from the Cabinet Member for Corporate Service and Performance (or whatever), who was very probably at home or in bed when it was all happening [-(

Joint taxi operation ensures passenger safety in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot

South Wales Police’s Swansea and Neath Port Talbot Licensing Team has partnered with Swansea Council Taxi Licensing staff to conduct a joint taxi operation to ensure passenger safety.

During the operation:

Over 30 taxis were stopped and checked
3 immediate suspension notices were issued
2 delayed suspension notices were issued, pending rectification of defects

Sergeant Chris Dix said:

“This was an important operation which worked to help ensure the safety of passengers using taxis after a night out in the city centre.

“We want passengers to feel reassured and confident that any taxi they enter following a night out is fully compliant with safety legislation.”

David Hopkins, Cabinet Member for Corporate Service and Performance, said:

“Taxis make up an important element of our city’s public transport and we want to make sure that the vehicles the public travel in are safe.

“We work regularly with our local police to carry out checks on taxis operating in the city and will continue to take action to ensure taxi operators are doing all they can to make sure their vehicles are road worthy and safe for use.”

as the constant falure rates in pendle have suggested there is a large segment of our trade that believes in taking risks with vehicle maintainence either because they struggle financially or come from a part of the world where that is the culture. Excersizes like this catch a few out but I doubt they change the culture.

The only way to stamp this out is to have a system whereby caught once it's a slap on the wrist caught twice it's a final warning and the third time it's bye bye license accompanied by more frequent checks such as turning up at offices and mandate them to call the cars in between bookings for a quick inspection of tyres and safety critical things (not bulbs)
