A man stopped with more than £500,000 worth of drugs in his car on the A11 has been jailed.

Taxi driver Anthony Clinton, 59, was stopped near Wymondham by police who discovered 21kg of ketamine, a powerful horse tranquilliser and anaesthetic that has become an increasingly popular recreational drug.

Norwich Crown Court heard following the stop, in the early hours of October 11 last year, Clinton's home address was also searched and further drugs were found.

The searches resulted in cocaine with a potential street value of £420,000 was found as well as class B drugs with a potential value of between £34,000 and £68,000.

The total potential street value of ketamine found both in Clinton's car and at his address was between £640,000 and £960,000.

Clinton, of Cromes Place, Badersfield, appeared at court for sentence on Friday (May 5) having admitted a series of drugs offences.

The offences included two counts of possession with intent to supply ketamine, two counts of possession with intent to supply cannabis and an offence of possession with intent to supply MMC, a class B drug.

He also admitted two counts of possession of cocaine as well as possession of ecstasy.

Jailing Clinton for five years and seven months Judge Katharine Moore said the defendant had used his "veneer of respectability" as a taxi driver to give him the opportunity to supply drugs.

Matthew McNiff, mitigating, said his client has no previous convictions and "became involved through others".

He said Clinton was put under surveillance and stopped by police with drugs found in his car and at home.

Mr McNiff accepted there was a "substantial" amount of drugs found but insisted this was not an individual who was "living the high life" as a result of his involvement.

Norfolk taxi driver told to pay back £200k over drug dealing

A drug dealing Norwich taxi driver caught on the A11 with 21 kilos of ketamine has been ordered to pay back almost £210,000 or face an increased jail sentence.

Anthony Clinton, 61, was jailed for five years and seven months last year after his arrest near Wymondham in October 2022.

Police discovered huge quantities of the powerful horse tranquilliser and anaesthetic that has become an increasingly popular recreational drug with a street value of between £630,000 and £840,000.

His arrest led to a search of his home at Cromes Place in Badersfield that saw further drug seizures worth tens of thousands of pounds at his home including cocaine, cannabis and Methylmethcathinone (MMC).

Appearing back at Norwich Crown Court having been brought from prison, he faced a proceeds of crime application for the seizure of his property and cash.

Recorder Nicola Fitches approved a confiscation order requiring him to pay back £209,361 within six months.

She warned him he faced an additional two years in prison if he failed to comply with the order.

Matthew McNiff, for Clinton, had sought to persuade the court that parts of the calculation of how much he had benefited from his drug dealing had been “flawed, inappropriate and unfair”.

But Richard Potts, representing the police, said: “The value of the drugs is not assumed it is the result of criminal conduct.”

Clearly this fella must have assets, I'm assuming property equity, and the courts want the money.

Now the fella could think he is clever and do the extra time, as he might view that money well spent.

However there will be a charge on the property, and that will never go.
