I don't Know about your areas, but in the Scottish borders we have to have a crb check every 3 years, surely this is a total waist of time and money, as we have not changed employment, and a simple police check would confirm any wrong doings, If this is the case in your area I think its time to bring this up with your MP or MSP as it is just bureaucratic nonsense, it should be one crb check only.

The information comes from the PNC by way of a simple name check.

Now that so many categories of employees ahve to be subject to these searches the Police would go under very quickly if the onus was put on them once more, quite simply they don't have the staff to provide a Police service, never mind a name check service.

Even when CO6 Met Pol (going back a few years!) did all the checks on London Cabbies, it was still every 3 years when you renewed your paper license.

So all enquires have to be submitted through the CRB agency, clearly you appreciate a lot can happen to an individual in a three year slot, he / she may have been convicted of a sexual attack in that period, and we don't want the Taxi industry employing people like that? Look at the London Minicab trade pre-licensing?

I think the problem is that when a driver does an iffy thing they don't often admit it to their LOs.

Yes a simple police check might suffice, but it wouldn't surprise me if the police charged you the same money as a full CRB check. And that's if they can be bothered to do it in the first place.

I think the CRB check is the best we are going to get. It's just a shame that at times they are so f***ing slow, and it's so bloody expensive.

finally got a copy of my CRB through today Huuuuuuuuuuray

Only took 14 weeks to process

London is 3 years also although a pal of mine decided to go from a local authority license outside London to PCO, he fancied a change of sceene he was on 1 year licensing and 1 year CRB you what the beggers did they made him produce a new CRB when his existing one was only a few days old

Ours is £13 but its payed by the council

we have to pay for this on top of the license fee and the medical

Does the CRB serve a real purpose? I wonder how many people who have been "CRB'd" have been found to have a dark secret past history? Does anyone out there know of anyone who has lost their job, (taxi driver, or not) because of a CRB check uncovering a previous unknown conviction? Is it known if anyone with an otherwise exemplarary record as a driver of many years standing has been refused a badge renewal because of a conviction from many years ago? Has anyone any knowledge, of a person working as a driver, or other sensitive position, being "found out" by a CRB check? And why do these checks come back with "nothing found" on them? Not exactly a ringing endorsement!

in my area i think several dozen have.
one because of what was on the crb return.
and two because they didnt tell the council when they should have.
a licensing prson told a mate of mine that 8 drivers have lost there licensing in the last few months.

Well,you will insist on living in a scuzzy town. But to clarify, were these already working drivers refused renewals, or new applicants? I mean, would it be reasonable to refuse to renew a badge, for a spent conviction, in your view? If I had a conviction for a minor offence in 1970, (I don't) would I be refused a badge? Should I be refused?

I think the fact over 20'000 drivers dissapeared from the London Minicab scene after CRO checks were introduced speaks volumes on the need to carry these out.

Did you get away with the axe murder conviction then?
