Rapidly losing the will to live reading this stuff. Again.

Only this time, it's not an elite Aberdeen business woman that's banging the drum, nor elite business interests. Instead it's a councillor who represents the interests of woman, and a similar student rep.

Maybe they should try a few shifts into the early hours and see how they get on - no doubt they'd be launching a campaign to address the 'gender imbalance' in late night drivers.

No, didn't think so [-(

And spot the word that didn't exist in the UK trade until Uber landed, suggesting this is maybe Uber-sourced in some way. It begins with the letter 'o'.

(And they've obviously managed to miss out stuff from this article - the 'Matthew' quoted is presumably Uber's manager in Aberdeen, but he's not actually introduced in the piece  )

Rising safety concerns as taxi shortage forces people to walk home at night

Long queues at taxi ranks are becoming increasingly common in Aberdeen and the arrival of Uber in the city hasn't eased the problem.

Safety concerns are rising at night-time in Aberdeen due to a lack of taxi provision.

Long queues at taxi ranks are becoming increasingly common, meaning some people need to walk home in the dark.

Councillor Lynn Thomson from Aberdeen Women’s Alliance, who organised a Reclaim the Night march in November, said: “Being a woman, every time you go out you think: ‘Will I take this path? It’s a bit longer but it’s better lit and it’s busier.’

“Will I carry my keys in my hand so I’m ready to open my door in case I need to do so in a rush? Will I actually go out at all? If I can’t get home safely then I might just stay home.

“That’s bad for everybody. It’s bad for the people who stay at home and it’s bad for the local economy.”

Christina Schmid, President of Aberdeen University Students‘ Association, said there’s always a feeling of “unsafety” late at night.

She continued: “Even that feeling might hinder some folk to go out or take a shift late at night, especially women or young students.”

It was hoped that the arrival of Uber would ease the problem.

However, the firm has struggled to onboard drivers in the city since its launch in the city in late October.

“From the demand that we’re seeing in our app we could probably hire roughly about 200 drivers tomorrow.

“But we can’t, at the moment, because of the Aberdeen City Council street knowledge test which is constraining supply.”

Unlike in Glasgow and Edinburgh, private hire car drivers in Aberdeen are required to sit a street knowledge test to gain a licence.

This has had an impact on the number of private hire cars in the city.

According to local authorities, Aberdeen has 284 private hire cars, Glasgow has 3,450 private hire cars, and Edinburgh has 2,717 private hire cars.

Matthew added: “There has been a street knowledge working group which has met this year and convened over three meetings.

“Our position was to advocate for removal of that test because it’s just not needed anymore, but the council decided to keep it and streamline it.

“From our perspective it will have no material difference on the number of drivers on the streets of Aberdeen.”

A spokesperson for Aberdeen City Council said: “A working group was established featuring councillors, members from the trade, local business representatives, and the Disability Equity Partnership to look at the makeup of the test and possible amendments to the content and process.

“The working group finished its deliberations and an updated test has now been brought into place for both taxi and private hire applicants. The first updated test was run on 10 December.”

The updated test has reduced the number of questions asked from 64 to 44.

Utterly meaningless comparison - apart from the population difference, Aberdeen has historically been dominated by HCs, thus a smaller PH sector. (And they're mixed fleets as well, unlike Glasgow and Edinburgh. And, of course, the historical black cab requirement in the two bigger cities will also be a factor encouraging a bigger PH sector. In fact, go back maybe 30 years, and didn't black cabs outnumber PH in Edinburgh? :-o )

And I think around c.1990 there were 800 HC in Dundee, and zero PH :-o

Reason being, vehicle and badge specs the same, so little real point in running a PH and be excluded from street hires

Historically Aberdeen has been a wee bit like that as well, hence the imbalance compared to similar sized cities, and to that extent the analysis in the article is meaningless. And misleading. But, of course, HC vehicle quotas and WAV requirments mean there's now a good number of PH in Dundee, but HCs still dominate. Aberdeen broadly similar, I'd guess :?

Well, of course you did - Uber's original premise was to use unlicensed drivers

Ah, worked it all out now [-(

Remember the softball Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce interview with Uber? (aka fireside chat...)

The journalist who did that has obviously moved on, and is now with STV News. So it's basically just a rehash of the propaganda from elite Aberdeen business and media interests, only now via the prism of the national STV news.

Forgot to say, there's a brief accompanying video on the STV's page above, and this is the same video on YouTube.

When it kicked off I thought it was maybe about *driver* safety, but, guess what?

Ah yes - 'Matthew' just happens to be head of cities for Uber UK. Item may as well have been written by their press department.

Never seen that word in an article about the taxi/PH trade.

Classic Uber speak.

I was at a meeting recently where I congratulated the Uber rep on mentioning the phrase 'first quarter of next year'.

First time I've ever heard that mentioned in 35 years of attending meetings.

Obviously the accountant's mindset showing through there :-o

Businesses usually prepare quarterly (and/or monthy accounts) as well as the annual figures prepared for the statutory annual accounts required by legislation and for HMRC requirements.

So the likes of the Uber management mindset will think of things in terms of quarters - not just the accounting profit or loss, but also stats such as passenger numbers and the like...

Use the search function on here for the word 'quarterly', and most of the latest results at least are about Uber's quarterly accounts and how that's impacting on the share price etc (as in Sussex's thread on the subject).
