CRASH BETWEEN AMBULANCE CAR AND TAXI CLOSES NEWPORT’S FAIRLEE ROAD

Image

A road traffic collision between a rapid response ambulance and a taxi has forced the closure of Newport’s Fairlee Road in both directions this lunchtime (Sunday).

Emergency services are currently on scene on the main road in and out of Newport near to where the speed limit changes from 40 to 30.

It’s here that a marked Isle of Wight Ambulance Service rapid response car – a Skoda Kodiaq – has collided head on with a taxi, causing significant damage to both vehicles.

Emergency services – including Police, fire and ambulance crews – were called to the scene at around 12:45.

All traffic, including Route 5 and 9 Southern Vectis buses, is being diverted via Staplers Road in both directions until further notice.

The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has been approached for a statement with further information on the circumstances of the crash expected shortly.

Island Echo understands the ambulance car was responding to an emergency call on blue lights at the time of impact.

Recovery of the 2 vehicles has been arranged and the road is expected to reopen as soon as the recovery operation is complete.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are underway.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has told Island Echo:

“At 12.43 today an Isle of Wight Ambulance Service Rapid Response vehicle on blue lights and sirens was involved in a collision with another car on Fairlee Road in Newport.

“Two people have been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital.

“An Ambulance was sent to the Patient that the Rapid Response Vehicle was on route too”.

TAXI DRIVER APPEARS IN COURT ACCUSED OF CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY TO PARAMEDIC BY DANGEROUS DRIVING

Image

The boss of a local taxi firm has appeared in court charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving following a crash between a taxi and a rapid response ambulance in September last year.

72-year-old Roger Coombes, of Fairlee Road in Newport, entered no plea to the single charge when he appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier today (Friday).

Brief details of the case were outlined by the Crown Prosecution Service’s Lauren Stone.

She told the bench that it was on 3rd September 2023 that emergency services responded to a head-on collision between a Ford Transit taxi and a Skoda rapid response vehicle belonging to the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service on Fairlee Road.

The paramedic at the wheel of the car, Hannah Harrison, sustained serious injuries including a fractured arm.

Magistrates adjourned the case to be sent up to the Isle of Wight Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on 23rd September.

Isle of Wight taxi boss accused of crashing into paramedic

A TRIAL date has been fixed for an Isle of Wight taxi firm boss accused of causing a paramedic serious injury in a head-on crash.

A hearing in the case of Roger Coombes, of Fairlee Road, Newport, was heard at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on Thursday, March 13.

The 72-year-old is charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

It is alleged that at 12.50pm on September 3, 2023, Mr Coombes collided with an emergency vehicle, namely a paramedic car, in a head-on crash on Fairlee Road.

Mr Coombes, who was the director of an Island taxi firm at the time, is said to have been behind the wheel of a Ford Procab.

The case was adjourned for a trial on April 28 and Mr Coombes was granted unconditional bail until that date.

His trail is estimated to last between three and four days.
