Hi Guys

Im new here and have joined as this forum looks to be very informative.

I hope that this wont make me to unpopular but I run a fire engine limousine here in Bristol. Looking through the archives of this forum I have come to the conclusion that the idea of any limousine let alone a fire engine may make me unpopular!

I felt that I had to join and put my side across as I have read the previous posts regarding fire engine limos and licensing.

I have licensed my vehicle through my local council as a private hire vehicle. I have an operators license and me and my drivers have all undergone CRB checks. We have also had a medical and undergone driving and knowledge tests.

I figured this was the most legal way of operating such as vehicle. Believe it or not I am on your side as it really [edited by admin] me off that 90% of stretch limos (and other fire engines) are operating without a correct license.

Obviously I only carry 8 passengers as my vehicle would never qualify for a COIF.

I does annoy me that I have to pay all the license and plate fees when others seem to be getting away with it. The thing that [edited by admin] me off more than anything is limos carrying 8+....lets not start on that!

I look forward to hearing your views!
regards
James

The issue isn't that many on here don't like fire-engines or limos, it's they don't like un-licensed vehicles and drivers.

The fact that you have licensed both means you are a fully paid up member of the TDO gang.

It is lucky for you that you live in an area that lets you licence the vehicle

Here in Renfrewshire one operator asked the local licensing team if he required a licence & he was told no, only to be charged by the Police a few years later for not having one

The charges were later dropped

Ive been looking into doing the same but cant get a straight answer from LA so it looks like it's "do it and then they'll make a decision"

Lots of cash to be made with fire engine, i know someone in liverpool who has one, it's fully booked months in advance. It's even used during the day at school fete's/kids birthdays etc

Geoff

That true they can be fantastic earners, especially in the busy prom season. There are usually 20 stretch limos (usually unlicensed!!) at every prom that I do and just the one fire engine....they want something different!

If you are looking to buy a fire engine or need any advice with regards to converting or getting it legal then please let me know

regards
James
(I think we may have spoke a few years back about fire engine limos???)

I think that the basic complaint has been against the authorities rather than the operators per se, although it may not always come across like that and/or be perceived as such - I was looking at a limo forum a few months ago and they obviously took a dim view of this site, although I think some of their critcism was unjustified since it made it look like anyone mentioning limos on here automatically deemed them to be cowboys etc.

However, one or two limo operators who have come on here in the past and tried to claim that they have been licensed when they actually weren't haven't been too popular.

But the basic grouse seems to be that the licensed trade has to go through all the associated rigmarole and has to adhere to this, that and the next rule, while in many areas a not unrelated sector doesn't have to bother licensing at all.

Of course, as mentioned at the outset this is not so much the fault of the operators as the LAs who prefer to turn a blind eye and/or effectively pass the buck to the DfT/VOSA etc, who to an extent do likewise, thus something of an impasse.

But that's government I suppose, but it'll all come out in the wash. Eventually
