You wouldn't necessarily suspect the driver of anything here, but why was the cash in the spare wheel compartment, and why did he say he was delivering the package while also having a passenger in the car? :-s

And I wonder why this car was stopped in the first place? 8-[

Nice pic of the M6, though

CUMBRIA Constabulary has been given permission to continue holding £39,000 of “suspicious” cash which was being transported along the M6 in a taxi.

The city’s Rickergate court heard that the money was found in the boot of the taxi after officers stopped it near Carlisle on Saturday, July 19, just after mid-day.

They intervened because they suspected something untoward was going on, a financial investigator told magistrates.

The driver and the rear seat passenger were questioned separately and gave inconsistent accounts for their journey from Glasgow.

The investigator said taxis are commonly used by criminals to transport illicit items from Scotland into England. When the taxi was searched, the officers found a tightly-wrapped package of cash in the boot's spare wheel compartment.

The driver said he was delivering the package to a person in London while the passenger said it was nothing to do with him, but he was asked to collect the package in Glasgow.

The investigator told magistrates that police suspected that the money was in some way linked to crime.

Magistrates approved the continued detention of the money while police continue to investigate where it came from and possible links to crime. The order was granted for six months under Proceeds of Crime legislation.

Granting the order, magistrates said they felt there were reasonable grounds to suspect the money was linked to crime, or intended for some criminal purpose.
