Injured taxi drivers 'traumatised' after 'racially aggravated assault' outside Wolverhampton station

https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/m ... r-32297593

The two victims were on duty in the city on Friday afternoon when the incident took place

Two elderly taxi drivers who were brutally attacked outside Wolverhampton railway station were said to be "traumatised" by the "scary" ordeal.

The two victims, who work for a local taxi firm, were said to be on duty in the city when the incident took place on Friday afternoon (August 15).

One of the drivers, who is in his 60s, was allegedly punched repeatedly, causing him to fall to the floor.

A colleague and friend, who was said to have tried to stop the violence, was also allegedly kicked and punched.

The second man, who is in his 70s, was believed to have suffered several broken ribs and was "heavily bruised, having difficulty breathing and in pain", according to the Sikh Federation (UK).

The federation said it had spoken to both victims - who had lived and worked in the UK for more than 30 years - and they had "never experienced such a violent and scary attack".

Jas Singh, principle advisor to the Sikh Federation (UK) said: “These two elderly men have been left seriously injured and traumatised by this attack."

Three teenagers have been arrested in relation to the incident after British Transport Police were called to reports of a racially aggravated assault at around 1.45pm.

The force said it was aware of footage circulating online and had launched a "full investigation".

A spokesperson said: "Officers were called to a racially aggravated assault around 1.45pm on Friday outside Wolverhampton station.

"Officers attended and three teenage boys were arrested in connection.

"The victims, two men, attended hospital for treatment and were discharged.

"We’re aware of a video on social media and understand the concern this will have caused in the community.

"We will not tolerate this sort of behaviour on the railway network and have launched a full investigation.

"Anyone who witnessed what happened to text 61016 quoting ref 353 of August 15."

Well whoever is making the comments in this video, and the people who posted the video online, obviously think this is some kind of racially-motivated attack, but who knows?

This presumably doesn't show the whole incident, but I'm not sure if there's a longer video available:

How brave of those feral youths beating up a couple of old taxi drivers?

Let's hope they get the justice they deserve.

Update on the BTP Facebook page, with bit more information. (And rehashed by the press elsewhere - this is the original text.)

Update following incident involving elderly Sikh men in Wolverhampton

British Transport Police (BTP) Superintendent Sue Peters is the local policing commander for the railways covering the Midlands.

She said: "I do not underestimate the level of concern this incident has caused to the victims and their families, the local community and beyond.

"In the interests of reassuring the community, I can confirm that BTP officers responded very quickly to make three arrests after the 999 call was made and an off-duty BTP Chief Inspector also stopped to assist.

"One 17-year-old boy and two men aged 19 and 25 were arrested in connection. They were taken into custody and later released on bail. The incident is being treated as racially-aggravated.

"Witness statements, CCTV and social media enquiries are also ongoing as part of a thorough investigation.

"A small number of officers were treated for minor injuries sustained during the course of the arrests.

"We have taken a statement from one of the victims, and are due to take the second man's statement today (19 August). This has taken a short time following the incident because of the injuries the men suffered, and the understandable shock it caused them. We arranged a suitable time to speak to them in accordance with their families' wishes, with the ongoing welfare of the victims being our number one priority. There have been some reports circulating that say the delay was caused by resourcing issues – this is not accurate.

"More widely we are engaging with our local MP, the Sikh Community, as well as the Sikh Police Association, to listen to their concerns.

"We will not tolerate this sort of behaviour on the railway network and will be continuing our swift investigation. Anyone who witnessed what happened and who hasn’t already spoken to police should text 61016 quoting ref 353 of 15th August."

Seems a strange way to phrase that - why not just specify the actual number of officers injured? :-k

Because she, or the press officer, didn't know.

Well I'd have worded it different, Sussex - reads to me like they're trying to spin a line or hide something.

But, as you say, the explanation may be entirely innocent O:)

I agree, they should just say we are not sure but will get back to you.

This is maybe better categorised in press reporting terms as human interest rather than shedding any light on the crime angle, or of much trade relevance :-|

And maybe seems a tad odd for a report like this at this stage in a criminal process, but the BBC should certainly know what they're doing in that regard :?

Taxi drivers feared being killed in station attack

Two Sikh taxi drivers feared they would be killed during an unprovoked attack near a train station in what police are treating as a racially-aggravated assault.

Satnam Singh and Jasbir Sangha said they were set upon by several men outside Wolverhampton Railway Station earlier this month, before members of the public came to their aid.

Mr Sangha said he suffered two broken ribs and remains in a lot of pain and Mr Singh, who lost his turban in the attack, was badly bruised when he was kicked and punched.

British Transport Police said a 17-year-old boy and two men, aged 19 and 25, were arrested in connection with the assault and later released on bail.

Both men said they were at work outside the station when three men approached Mr Singh and started making demands while swearing and using racist language.

Mr Singh was pushed to the ground before they turned on Mr Sangha when he tried to intervene.

Women intervened

Mr Singh, 64, said he was devastated by the loss of his turban as it covers uncut hair and is one of the five physical symbols worn by Sikhs who have been initiated into the Khalsa.

The men said they were grateful for two women coming to their aid, helping stop the attack from continuing.

"When he put me on the floor... when I get up after, I try to sit [and] when I look, I have no turban on my head... that time I am feeling I am dead," he said.

He said the attack had made him "very sad and scared".

"I think that I am dead when he threw me and punched me."

'It could have killed me'

Mr Sangha, 72, said he was punched in the face and then jumped on by the men.

"I was just trying to defend myself. It happened so quick and I was on the floor," he said.

"All I see afterwards was one of the guys kicking me.

"Anything could have happened. Anything. I could have been killed."

The incident was filmed by bystanders and has been viewed more than a million times on social media.

"When I saw the video it was so scary for me, it could have killed me," Mr Sangha added.

He suffered two broken ribs and said he was still in pain.

"When you sit down, get up, when you sneeze, it's a killer. It's a shock to your body, it's a hell of a pain."

He said he wanted to get back behind the wheel of his taxi as he had worked all his life, but the attack has left him scared.

Of the women who came to their aid, Mr Singh said: "One lady was young, one lady was old-ish, white ladies but very helpful, very very helpful,"

Mr Sangha said: "The people were very helpful. They were shouting at them, 'What are you doing?'.

"I really thank them for their help."

'Sikh children targeted'

Jas Singh, from the Sikh Federation UK, said he wanted the government to do more to protect Sikhs and help monitor any similar incidents.

"A year on now [since Labour came into government] we've still not seen any engagement from government with organisations like the Sikh Federation or gurdwaras in general to set up reporting centres in gurdwara to understand how to protect our elderly, our young, the vulnerable aspects of our community.

"Because we see, not only the attack in Wolverhampton but there are an increase on Sikh children in schools, in colleges and all of this is going unreported and the community is feeling neglected."

Delighted to see they are recovering, and I hope they will get back behind the wheel of a car soon.

But I still can't get my mind around teenagers beating up OAPs.

Feral is too nice a name for them.
