York welcome
by Reader's letter

IT was interesting to read the letter from Mr McCabe ("Strain on train", March 9).

We travelled by GNER the previous Sunday with no problems at all, the 10pm train arriving in York at 12.10am, a few minutes early.

Our "problem" started with the taxi driver from the station taxi rank. On our way home he was asked if he would accept travel tokens, only to be told that he worked for cash at that time of the early morning; what was I doing out of bed at that time?; and he could not understand why pensioners were given tokens anyway.

After a wonderful weekend in London, what a welcome back to York.

I'm not sure what the situ is up there, but if the car can redeem the tokens at his office then he is a bit of a pillock for not taking them.

But if he works independant of an office then I don't blame him for blanking them.

Yes, but he could have perhaps been a bit more diplomatic about it, but of course there are always two sides to every story.

A major source of friction is public ignorance of taxi matters, but of course the cause of this is generally that LAs make things unnecessarily complicated, due to their own ignorance, and neither they, the trade nor the public really know what's happening outside their own little bubble.

I think its part of the gner contract to take tokens. I have had "young" people trying to pay with travel tokens, oh, my granny gave me them to use up.

we have disabled vouchers.
on them it lists the firms and there numbers that they can be used with.
be they taxi or ph.
ive even taken them off the rank no problem.
get 100% of the fare.
and if they want change i just tear off a bit and give it back. :lol:

It's "best practise" to accept them. Pensioners get £22 in tokens here. Refuse to take them, and they go elswhere. £22 in tokens, how much in CASH do they take elswhere, you silly synt? :wink: :lol: :lol:

I think the forum's server was on strike, so I pressed the button twice(?) - I knew exactly what would happen, but carried on regardles; your intrepid administrator risking life, limb and personal ridicule to bring you his cutting edge views, not to mention salvage something from the microwave before it burnt to a frazzle :lol:

Any driver working from York railway station has signed a contract agreeing to accept tokens, and by not doing so is in breach of that contract. The usual situation regarding tokens is that they usually give you more than the fare anyway.
