Note this is the same authority that recently didn't renew the one who filmed the strippers and got a bit lairy with police, although I don't think he was as violent as this one...although he didn't turn up, while this one did

Licensing chiefs give man a reprieve after he shows remorse.

A man who was convicted of assaulting a police officer has been granted a taxi licence, despite failing to declare the conviction after showing remorse.

Police Scotland told Wednesday’s North Ayrshire Licensing Committee that they objected to a taxi driver’s licence being granted to Greg Davidson.

Routine checks were carried out by Police Scotland, which showed Mr Davidson to have a live conviction not declared on his licence application form.

The conviction date was April 22, 2024 at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court for an assault. The disposal was a fine of £500 and victim surcharge of £20.

On December 11, 2022 at Vernon Street, Saltcoats, Mr Davidson assaulted a male police constable and struggled with him, pushed him on the body, causing him to fall into the roadway, repeatedly punched and attempted to punch him on the head and body, attempted to seize him on the body and challenged him to a fight.

The Police Scotland spokesman said: “The Police Service of Scotland is of the opinion that by reason of the above circumstances the applicant is not a fit and proper person to be granted such a taxi licence.”

Mr Davidson said: “It was not a good time in my life. I had been separated from my wife and not seen the kids for a wee while, it was quite bad. It is not an excuse it was completely out of character, I apologise for everything I have done. I have not been in trouble since and had not been in trouble before.

“Me and my wife are back together and I am out in public for the company I work for now. I am in and out of peoples’ houses and gardens and coach a kids’ football team.”

Cllr Christina Larsen asked why he did not declare the conviction.

He said: “I can’t lie, I cannot remember seeing that part, I was trying to do the application quickly, I don’t know not trying and am not trying to to hide anything.”

Cllr Larsen said this would teach him in future to take time filling out important forms.

She added: “We have high expectations of taxi drivers and expect them to act accordingly when dealing with the public. I am pleased to hear your family situation is much better and expect you to be able to deal with stressful situations in a more productive way as opposed to lashing out at other people.”

Mr Davidson said he had a job set up if the licence was granted.

He added that he had friends in the police and said he was “disgusted” at himself for his behaviour.

A proposal from Cllr Larsen to grant the licence for a year, seconded by Cllr Ronnie Stalker, was unanimously agreed by the committee.

Licensing chair Eleanor Collier said she was encouraged he had turned things around and his life was back together, wishing him luck.

It often seems that some of these councillors are quite, er, suggestible...


But presumably no 'friends' in the Police Scotland section that deals with licensing applications?

Who I'm sure are more than 'disgusted' at the licensing committee's decision - 'raging', might be a more apt description...

I'm all for giving people a second chance, but this wasn't just a mild assault, although it appears the injuries were.

The above is quite an assault, not a slight mistake or overreaction. The fella is/was a thug and shouldn't have been licensed.
