Most of us on here will use the auto payment system, but from time to time we drop off at airports where we haven't signed up to, and forget to pay—leading to a nasty letter in a month or so.

In my Xmas Day not working boredom, I took a peep at the Money Saving Expert Motoring Forum, which has a brilliant fines/penalty/appeals section.

Was amazed to find out that if you use your head and follow the advice on the forum, any drop-off fines/penalties are not really enforceable.

Thanks for the information Sussex, although it's all a huge rabbit hole that I'd prefer to avoid unless push comes to shove  8-[

But reminds me of an incident at Edinburgh Airport a few weeks ago, which isn't a precise parallel to the stuff above, but the kind of stuff above certainly very relevant if it all kicked off.

But think I got away with it. And pretty sure I'd get away with it if the powers that be decided to pursue it, and even if I had to take it all the way to the Supreme Court

But I'm still a bit paranoid about it all, so won't be outlining the details on here, in case anyone happens to read it  :-#

About 10% of the time, especially when it's dark, the Gatwick auto pay system doesn't auto charge, which is a very nice bonus for me.

A couple of times, they have sent me a charge notice through, but as they have been outside the 2-week timescale, I have appealed, and they have canceled the charge.

I thought it might just be the timescale that made the scammers bin the charge, but maybe it's because, unless I tell them who was driving, they have no legal right to know in these cases.

Precisely, in most cases the registered keeper is under no obligation to reveal who was driving. Any contract to park is between the driver (not "the motorist"), whoever that may be and not "the owner (maybe a lease company), and not the regsistered keeper.

There's a process to go through, have a look on what was Pepipoo, now FTLA.uk for lots of free helpful advice on how to avoid paying prking tickets. A lot of it is in the wording on the parking charge notice.
