As per usual with a lot of similar cases, would be interesting to know what evidence there was, if any, that the vehicle was a 'taxi', other than what the driver claimed :?

Sex attacker posed as taxi driver to abduct Nottingham student

Kelvin Ndoro drove the young victim to a Lidl car park and sexually assaulted her there

A bogus taxi driver posed as a cabbie to abduct and sexually assault a student in Nottingham city centre.

Nottingham Crown Court heard how Kelvin Ndoro talked the young victim into getting into his car before driving her to a supermarket car park.

Once there he stroked her leg and tried to talk her into getting into the back of the vehicle.

But the quick-thinking Nottingham Trent University student had already videoed the defendant carrying out the stroking and when he unlocked the doors of the car she fled and hid behind a low wall.

Jailing him for 15 months, Judge Mark Watson said: “The victim no longer feels safe walking in the city where she lives.

“She is scared because she has now experienced being a vulnerable person assaulted by somebody with predatory behaviour.

“It is a sad reality that women feel unsafe when alone and your actions have contributed to that atmosphere of fear.

“You saw a sexual opportunity, you offered her a lift indicating you were a taxi driver no doubt giving her an element of trust and she accepted that and when you went the wrong way she told you to turn around, you didn’t.

“She then told you to take her home and you didn’t.

“Instead you drove her to a car park where the doors were locked and you sexually assaulted her.

“She managed to get out, was hysterical, and was offered help by a group of young men, and they showed the other side of humanity, taking her to the safety of her boyfriend.

“In your pre-sentence report you said you believe her to be a sex worker due to the location and what she was wearing.

“I find that you were in Nottingham looking for a sex worker and took this opportunity, and this included abduction."

“The people of Nottingham need to know that those who prey on women at night will be dealt with seriously and will receive custodial sentences.

Stuart Lody, prosecuting, said the student had been out socialising in the city centre on May 18, last year, and at around 4.25am on South Sherwood Street, Ndoro, posing as a taxi driver, pulled his car up next to where she was walking home and offered her a lift.

He said she got in but the 41-year-old defendant started driving in the opposite direction of the address she told him, so she asked him to turn around at the roundabout.

The prosecutor said instead, he drove her to the car park of Lidl in Mansfield Road where he carried out the sex attack.

Mr Lody said: “He asked her to get in the back of the car and she said no but then agreed seeing it as her chance to flee from the scene.

“When he unlocked the doors she ran and hid behind a low wall and got the attention of a group of young men who were also on their way home from a night out.”

The prosecutor said Ndoro was identified from the video she took and from ANPR evidence, was arrested, interviewed and told officers he had been out in Sheffield and stopped in Nottingham “to get some food”.

In a victim impact statement, the student said she felt "embarrassed and stupid for getting in the car”.

The defendant, formerly of Whitehill Avenue, Luton and more recently of King Street, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, pleaded guilty to sexual assault.

Matthew Pardoe, mitigating, said his client had written a letter to the court expressing his remorse.

As well as the jail term, the judge handed Ndoro a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and placed him on the sex offender register, also for 10 years.
