A private hire driver accused of sexually assaulting a female while working has had his licence hearing continued so his lawyer can be present and a potential translator.

Sobhan Ahmadi, who is currently suspended from working as a driver, has been charged with allegedly assaulting the female on January 5 in Johnstone.

The city licensing committee heard he is accused of touching her face, hair, breast and thigh and was acting as a private car hire driver at the time of the alleged incident.

Appearing before yesterday’s committee, Ahmadi said his lawyer was not present and his English is not good.

Committee chair Councillor Sean Ferguson said the hearing should be continued until a later date to allow Ahmadi to “get representation” and a potential translator due to his “lack of English”.

Ahmadi had a court appearance at Paisley Sheriff Court on Febrary 10 – and was released on bail on a number of conditions.

Ahmadi’s private hire licence was suspended on January 15 by the council’s licensing section for six weeks following a complaint from Police Scotland. The city’s licensing committee is to decide whether to suspend or revoke his licence.

Ahmadi is due back before the committee later this month.

He was granted his private hire car driver’s licence by Glasgow City Council on June 11, 2025 for three years with an expiry date of May 31, 2028.

More seriously, it's presumably whether to proceed to the usual suspension for the unexpired part of his licence as opposed to the current six week period. Or to simply revoke.

Maybe someone could have a look through that link from EFTA the other night to the procedural stuff - I'm sure all the ins and outs are in there

In fact searching the document shows only one instance of the word 'unexpired', but quite a few instances of 'revoke' or 'revocation'.

Can't be bothered wading through it all, but you can see that a number of instances of the r-word have been inserted after the legislation was enacted. Which is maybe why there seems to be more of an inclination up here to suspend rather than revoke (as mentioned previously on here), at least historically.

But all that's probably why the piece above includes the date of his grant and when it expires. Which, as mentioned previously, seems to be a thing that's highlighted more in the Scottish context, presumably because of the different suspension/revocation dynamic north and south of the border.

I suspect he was suspended pending this hearing, and that suspension remains until the new hearing.

The suspension or revocation question going forward is quite possibly down to what actions the police/CPS (or whatever the Scots call them) decide to take.
