Some of the Liverpool cases posted on their licensing twitter account in the past few weeks...

(Taxi Point readers may have read some of these already...)

Nothing particularly spectacular (apart from the fancy pants graphics), but maybe a slight difference from the norm with most of them, including this most recent one. Or at least the difference from the norm is action actually being taken, and being suspended for it :-o

Last week, a taxi driver appeared before the Licensing Sub Committee following several complaints of refusing card payments, including one from a fellow driver. The committee members were not satisfied with the driver’s explanation and issued a two-week suspension

Not clear what the 'serious safety concerns' were here, although probably not that unusual. But he continued working after suspension...

After having their PHV licence suspended due to serious safety concerns, a Liverpool licensed driver chose to continue working. The matter was recently heard in court, 8 points issued, a 9-month ban imposed for exceeding 12 points, and a total fine of £990

Not difficult to spot the slightly unusual feature here.

But I wonder how much overloading goes on, at least where prying eyes least likely to see what's going on?

And that's one thing I recall from back in the day that doesn't happen much now, at least to me - people (particularly women fluttering their eyelashes etc) being all nicey, nicey and trying to get five or more people into a four seater, then kicking off with a barrage of abuse and aggression when you hold your ground.

I suspect the reason it doesn't happen so much for me these days is a) because I'm no longer in Dundee, and b) because I tend to be off home before the worst of the pish-heads appear :-o

In fact the last person who tried to get five into my saloon was, er, a licensing councillor

(And two adults and three small kids probably not particularly dangerous, and in fact probably would have been allowed back in the day under the rules applicable then...)

No booking, extra passengers, and hoping no one notices, unfortunately for one Sefton PHV driver at a recent event on Blackstone Street, our officers noticed. Summons to be prepared for offences. #Publicsafety #Enforcement

One of Sussex's favourite scenarios, both in the vehicle and in court

A Sefton licensed PHV driver was issued a Fixed Penalty for smoking inside a licensed vehicle, an offence that is both illegal and unhygienic. The driver failed to pay the fine or engage with Officers, and the matter was recently heard in court, resulting in a £458 penalty.

This is probably the most obviously routine one of this thread:

A Sefton licensed PHV driver has recently been before the courts after being caught plying for hire and driving without insurance during a test purchase operation in Liverpool City Centre last year. The driver received 8 penalty points and was fined £1,315.

Civil Enforcement Officers issued 105 PCNs in March to vehicles illegally parked on taxi ranks during the nighttime economy.

Taxi ranks must remain clear to ensure public safety, accessibility, and the smooth operation of licensed Hackney Carriage Vehicles.

And this is certainly quite a routine occurence in Liverpool.

On the other hand, probably just doesn't happen at all in other local authority areas [-(

now now stuart you know this is a nationwide issue some drivers resent paying commission to banks out of their takings and of course card payments make it harder to massage your tax returns. We all know drivers who openly brag about how much they hide from the tax man

The main point is making such things compulsory is removing the freedom of choice of whether to take card payments or not and fining people for not taking card payments borders into civil liberties territory.

Commercially it makes sence but fining a self employed person for choosing not to take card is not free market economics
