Police seize two vehicles and report 28 drivers in taxi checks at Stansted Airporthttps://www.bishopsstortfordindependent ... t-9464724/Two uninsured vehicles were seized and 28 drivers reported for motoring offences during safety checks at Stansted Airport.
The operation in Thremhall Avenue on Wednesday, April 29 was primarily aimed at taxis and private hire businesses.
Officers from Essex Police stopped the drivers of other vehicles if they spotted potential offences. Altogether, 50 were pulled over for further inspection.
PC Ross Ashcroft, of the Stansted Airport neighbourhood policing team, said: “Our priority is keeping people safe. That’s not just at the terminal but on the surrounding roads as well.
“The vast majority of drivers of private hire vehicles and taxis are law-abiding and keep their vehicles well maintained. But there are a few who ignore the laws which help to keep them, their passengers and other road users safe, and it’s those few we are looking out for.
“I was disappointed we had to seize two vehicles for being uninsured. We also reported 28 drivers for prosecution related to offences including not being insured, not wearing seatbelts and for illegally modified index plates, or ‘ghost plates’.”
The neighbourhood policing team joined colleagues in roads policing and the force’s commercial vehicle unit, as well as staff from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).
Uttlesford, Braintree, Chelmsford, Harlow and Wolverhampton council staff were also present to check taxi and private hire drivers were correctly licensed.
PC Ashcroft added: “A number of legal requirements must be met by drivers who are paid to carry passengers and this includes a medical examination to ensure they are fit to drive.
“Stansted Airport attracts air passengers from all over the country, and we will be carrying out more of these checks with the DVLA and councils to ensure their safety on the roads as they arrive at and depart from the airport.”
