No questions regarding the method of hiring and legitimacy of the driver and vehicle here.
But maybe a bit unusual in that scenario in that he's denying it was even him - and they had an identity parade
Would be interesting to know how he came to have to 'assist her out of the car', though. Which just doesn't sound like the norm...
Even if you were so minded to do that, the norm would be that they'd be out of the car and away before you even got the chance...
Chelmsford taxi driver 'grabbed and touched' woman in alleged assaulthttps://www.essexlive.news/news/essex-n ... d-10960519The driver denies the offence and is on trial at Chelmsford Crown CourtA taxi driver allegedly grabbed a single mother and touched her breasts as she left his cab, a court heard. Argent Bajrami, 40, denies a single count of sexual assault and is on trial at Chelmsford Crown Court.
A hearing on Monday (May 11) heard Mr Bajrami allegedly assaulted the woman after she had been meeting friends in Chelmsford in June 2023. The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had gone to the taxi rank on Baddow Road.
It's alleged that she got into a taxi being driven by Mr Bajrami, of Thames Avenue in Chelmsford. Jurors were shown CCTV that prosecutors say was Mr Bajrami’s vehicle as it slowly moved along the road outside The Courtyard Bar.
Mr Richard Potts, prosecutor, said they believe the footage shows “a large taxi of the type that the defendant was driving” at the front of the queue and that a woman wearing clothes that they say “fits that which the complainant was wearing". The woman was taken on her journey and paid the £30.70 taxi fare before looking for the cab lights so she could find her key.
"She was assisted out of the car by the driver who then grabbed her, touched her breasts, grabbed her bottom and pulled her close," Mr Potts alleged. "She was taken aback by this. She backed away to her front door. She urgently got in and shut the door, making sure that the back door was locked."
The taxi then drove off from the scene. The court heard that the woman did not know who the driver was, but made an online complaint to Chelmsford City Council.
Enquiries were made, and Mr Bajrami was identified after a matching taxi fare was found on a card reader. He was initially arrested and interviewed before being released under investigation. He was then re-interviewed after being in an identity parade.
"The prosecution case is that he was the driver who sexually assaulted this complainant," Mr Potts said.
"His case is that it was not him. It’s your decision as to where the truth lies."
The trial continues.
