Well, I've basically had it with trying to find out how much you can earn, it seems no-one in the trade will give anything away. Maybe for tax reasons? I dont know. But the money must be good, otherwise they'd tell you straight up?

The reason I don't quote specific figures is that quite simply neither I nor anyone else knows what other taxi drivers earn, particularly in other areas.

The problem is that there are so many variables to consider that to quote specific figure might give people a misleading impression, and this is what our FAQ says on the issue:

Quote:
Earnings in the UK trade vary enormously, and at the extremes there are drivers working regularly for an hourly equivalent less than the National Minimum Wage, while it’s claimed that London black cab drivers are capable of earning a six figure sum (this is probably the gross figure), but the vast bulk of drivers earn nothing like that.

I know about the lower end because there are plenty of hired drivers in my manor working regularly for less than the minimum wage. At the top end, I'm quite sure many London drivers earn more than a grand a week profit (ie after expenses but before tax), but this will involve working till the early hours and fairly long hours as well. And I've no doubt either that many London drivers will only earn a fraction of this.

So in UK terms you're basically talking anything from £4 an hour to over £20, but I suspect most will be luck to earn more than £10 an hour.

From what I've been told, minicab drivers here in London can make around 400 pounds for just doing Friday, Saturdays and Sundays alone. That's sounds like far above the national average to me, or is there something I am missing here (?)

So are you talking turnover or net profit? No doubt they could easily take that, but 400 pounds turnover would basically amount to zero profit, but if you're talking £400 profit then you're looking at double this in gross terms?

Even in my own manor the worst I've had is about £1 an hour gross for a 7 hour shift  , while my best week has probably been around a grand.

Big difference :?

TDO,

I am talking about £400 gross (ie before costs+tax) for Fri, Sat and Sun, but around £600 for the week

I can't imagine costs per week for a minicab could be more than £200.

£40 insurance, £60 fuel, £70 controller rent, £30 maintenance, which leave you with £400, lets say out of that £200 is taxable if you have a good accountant, so you are left with e net of around £350 a week which is pretty awful (come to think of it)!

I guess I should add that I dont know if these minicabbers are even paying tax! Because with all the hours they are putting in, after they pay tax + costs they are not left with much at all!

Any firm that only charges £70 a week ain't worth working for. [-X

I would imagine a rent of between £100 and £150 is the norm. :-$

There's also depreciation, say £50 pw for a reasonable motor?

But I would have thought that a minicab driver in London working for a decent firm would be grossing nearer a grand for a lot of hours and all weekend.

But like the trade generally, within London minicabs there's likely to be many different scenarios.

The black economy is certainly a feature of some parts of the trade, and of course that's one of the factors that drives down earnings.
