With all the sadness and trauma going on in the taxi trade in edinburgh at the
moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important
person, which almost went unnoticed last week. Larry LaPrise, the
man that wrote "The Hokey Kokey" died peacefully at the age of 93.
The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the
coffin.
They put his left leg in. And then the trouble started

oh and just becouse you repeat it all the time doesnt make it true.
me and garry arent criminals.

If PHC is so profitable, why you still "hammering the airport" and not making your fortune driving your PHC which must be so much cheaper. You got some drivers on it who can't pass there breif, and are stupid enough to pay the inflated prices you got to be charging. If they were makin so much money they wouldn't have been illegally plying for hire outside the Dome and Le Monde.

you dont know if any one was illegally plying for hire do you?
what we do know is that you were thier and unwilling to take hires, becouse you were to busy peeping on the competition.
so in effect you were not willing to do youre job and you decry someone else for having the gaul to be for hire

Numbers can say anything, youve never told us how many of these PHC's are on weekend only circuits, or how many have a radio and a meter fitted, so how many are only plated for school runs etc. Also lets see how many of them fail to have there meters ajusted to to new tariff when if goes up. You, Skull and your merry band, will all of course either turn the increase down or will give a discount to every fare. There again maybe you shouldn't do that Ali or Garry will deal out his kind of justice and give you a sore face

well you tell us how many are on
weekend circiuts (do you believe what you say, you seriously think someone runs a part time business, new car insurance and plate, to mmmm only come out now and again, a hobby in effect, utter crap.)
school runs(do you seriosly believe that school runs arent competition
why then do so many taxis do school runs then) i take it you are night shift as you seem to have the single perspective of only what effects you on youre shift.
ill ignore the rest as its just the usual crap, except in so far as telling you that skull is garry, a point you seem to be missing.

Before Ali T starts any more of his [edited by admin] I passed my test (first time!!)back in 1991. when the test didn't include Telford Colleges load of useless bollocks, but did include the two routes with no choice and automatic fail for getting either wrong

whats this all about
you past youre test ...........and
so did i and 3500 other guys it aint hard, oh and by the way i past 1st time and got 100% in 1992.
dont know if youve noticed but the knowledge has been replaced by sat nav, and the taxi driver by phc driver, and the taxi by a merc vito .
as can be seen outside 16 george street where the taxi sits idley by watching the phc pick up in his nice shiny vito, and his sat nav, while the taxi driver just sits with his jaw on the deck wondering what went wrong

Well worth remembering. We're running a book. IF Salteri or anyone else puts on a taxi with one of these ill-gotten plates, how long before it sustains serious damage?

Do you have evidence of such a book? If you don't then perhaps we can discount that part of your post and concentrate on the more threatening nature of the post concerning serious damage to vehicles?

Quote:
Favorite at the moment is within 7 days. what do you think Ali?
I do not condone this sort of attack, nor do I support it, but one hears the talk and one ignores it at one's peril.

So you admit to hearing the talk and from that talk you understood the most likely event damage would occur was within seven days of the vehicle being licensed? This would suggest you know who said it? If not by name, certainly by looks. If there are no other persons involved then it would mean you made the threat up and disguised it to look like you were not a party to the threat but merely the bearer of potential harm to one or more innocent parties? I also note you say we? Would you care to expand on the "we" part of your post?

Quote:
Ali - live by the sword and you will surely perish by it!!

Is this another veiled threat?

I too was trying picking up a fare at Le Monde, but couldnt get near for 14 PHC's sitting about doing nothing trying to seagull fares. If all those PHC's were legally awaiting their fares why were they still there 20 mins later when I went back to the rank - like good cab drivers should! And then when I went back again 10 mins later and a cop van was sitting there, they had all magically disappeared. You missed this part.

Explain why anyone should pay in the region of 40K for a plate to buy a job?

i dont care what ph are doing ill leave that to you.
you certainly seem to be preocupied with them and us.
they are thier becouse we are not, its healthy competition in my opinion.
one that you and youre ilk seem to say doesnt exist.
until it siuts you that is.

you see you and guys like you just complain constantly.

so do tell what are you going to do about the ph problem ?

i for one cant afford to pay the inflated rentals.
nor the inflated plate premiums.
how you have the brass neck to say thier is no unmet demand for taxi's and drivers shouldnt get thier plates, then tell us how much the ph are allagedly stealing from you.
if thiers no demand then the problem would not exist would it.
funny how this is a problem for you but one you wont admit to if it means people get plates.
very sad

It’s just the blame game Ali and he won’t admit it. As long as they can point the finger then all is well, cocooned in their own ignorance.

Plato had a little story about this kind of mind set “The allegory of the cave” sort of sums them up.

I'm sure TDO and JD know this one.

Very fitting don't you think.

If you'd seen the number of PHC's who on Saturday night were obviously all legitimately waiting on their pre-booked fares, whilst committing the criminal act of obstructing a taxi rank, the rank outside 16 George Street to be precise, who all magically disappearred when a police van parked itself in the middle of George Street outside The Hard Rock Cafe, was just amazing? The truth is that CEC have been guilty of maladministration and it is they who should be the focus of anybody's anger or dissatisfaction.

Funny you should mention "maladministration" NF. I asked the council a few questions concerning that very matter.

1. Who is directly responsible for taking the decision not to consider any of the 41 Taxi licence Plate applications within the first 3 month period? Subject to section 3(1) of the 1982 Act imposes a requirement to "consider" and thereafter reach a "final decision".

2. Why was this decision taken?

3. Where and when was this decision taken?

Can’t wait to see their reply, so far they won’t even give me confirmation of receiving my email.

They seem a little bent out of shape, can’t think why but there you go I’m sure Bob Miller is working on the answer.

Yes, very profound. #-o

And it's not like I had to look it up on Wikipedia or nowt like that. 8-[

But I suppose it's a bit like the 'cognitive dissonance' concept that was discussed on Fastblacks a few weeks ago. I liked the straigthforward explanation of this provided by a Times journalist a few weeks ago:

The experience of Marian Keech led Festinger to write his famous paper A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance. Festinger argued that when ideas and reality collide, people do not adjust their behaviour to suit the newly understood truth. Instead they rationalise, twisting the truth around until it suits their existing behaviour.

Very fitting for those who can't see beyond the wall they erected for themselves. Your analogy perfectly describes those who choose not to see the light, however in this case they only have themselves to blame because they were directed towards the light on numerous occasions but preferred to ignore it.

Here is another one for you TDO since you mention the Dissonance theory again :)

The Parable of the Abilene Paradox

Four adults are sitting on a porch in 104-degree heat in the small town of Coleman, Texas, some 53 miles from Abilene. They are engaging in as little motion as possible, drinking lemonade, watching the fan spin lazily, and occasionally playing the odd game of dominoes. The characters are a married couple and the wife’s parents. At some point, the wife’s father suggests they drive to Abilene to eat at a cafeteria there. The son-in-law thinks this is a crazy idea but doesn’t see any need to upset the apple cart, so he goes along with it, as do the two women. They get in their unair-conditioned Buick and drive through a dust storm to Abilene. They eat a mediocre lunch at the cafeteria and return to Coleman exhausted, hot, and generally unhappy with the experience. It is not until they return home that it is revealed that none of them really wanted to go to Abilene–they were just going along because they thought the others were eager to go. Naturally, everyone sees this miss in communication as someone else’s problem!

How Do We Know When We Are Headed for Abilene?

Harvey points to six characteristics emblematic of a group failing to manage agreement effectively:

Members individually, but privately, agree about their current situation. The group in Coleman knew individually that they were satisfied with just sitting on the porch.
Members agree, again in private, about what it would take to deal with the situation. In this case, the members privately agreed that staying on the porch was a good way to spend a hot and dusty day.
Members fail to communicate their desires and/or beliefs to one another, and, most importantly, sometimes even communicate the very opposite of their wishes based on what they assume are the desires and opinions of others. People make incorrect assumptions about consensus. In the Abilene case, one suggestion (offered on the assumption that the people wanted to do something besides sit on the porch) began a domino-like sequence of individual agreement with the concept in spite of each person’s private misgivings about the desirability and wisdom of making the trip to Abilene.
Based on inaccurate perceptions and assumptions, members make a collective decision that leads to action. It is in the action that it becomes apparent that the decision is contrary to individual desires. They thereby arrive at a destination they did not want to go to in the first place. Our protagonists in the parable do not actually discover their unanimous disagreement with the action they took until someone says, "Well, that was a nice trip." Another person is then moved by frustration and exhaustion to blurt out the truth, "It was not a good idea or a nice trip!"
Members experience frustration, anger, and dissatisfaction with the organization. Often this leads to the forming of sub-groups that take combative or blaming positions toward each other. The Abilene group begins asking themselves immediately, "Whose crazy idea was this anyway?" and thus starts the blaming cycle.
Finally, members are destined to repeat this unsatisfying and dysfunctional behavior if they do not begin to understand the genesis of mismanaged agreement

And your point, explicate your perceptions and how they apply to the current situation, I am not exactly sure where you are coming from?

I wouldn’t want to misinterpret the points you are trying to make.
