Surely half the time drivers speak to each other they are slagging other drivers off, so maybe an open channel might not be such a good idea.

OK I just wanted to confirm what I knew, I thought the law had changed, and that was you do not need a base, but could you set up a base with talk through so you could contact a driver who is out of rang in the car but could here you if it came through the base station.
Her indoors wants to come back driving but as I always have the land line diverted to the mobile and the car radio ranges from 2 miles to 18 depending on where I am, I would like to stay in touch to pass runs on

Your right, car to car wont give much range compaired to base to car. Just bear in mind, a talk through base is a repeater ie a radio that can receive and transmit at the same time normally on the same antenna so the normal little raido sitting on a power pack just won't work.

Your existing base radio just wont work as a repeater so I can't tell you how to do it. Talk through bases don't come cheap and I recon there will be no change from £1,500. :-o Maybe you can find a second hand one and get it programmed up but they are not exactly common.

Do you not require a special type of RA license for this anymore then :?:

And is it not difficult to get :?:

Not that I can see why a cab operation would need or indeed want this

I don't really know. I've never had the need to apply for it but a few of my customers already had this facility in place on their existing voice channel.

As far as I can see though, there's just a tick box on the application that askes if you require controlled talk-through.???

buy a scanner to hear the other drivers, if your driver wants to hear and speak to other drivers on your firm tell him to buy a scanner
