According to the DfT back in 2004 Brighton had 479 taxis, which consisted of 57 purpose built 28 mpv's and 394 saloons? It would appear there is not a lot of difference in saloon and private hire numbers when you consider there were only 429 private hire saloons back in 2004.

the last set of numbers i saw from the ph lad was 480 odd taxis and 460 odd ph.
i think there are about 70 wav taxis and 20 wav phs.
and all ph run off the taxi tarriff with meters.

In Brighton there is no distinguishable features between most hackney carriage and private hire vehicles, except for colour, taxi sign and perhaps a meter?

Well only colour really, because the PH have roofsigns and meters, I think, although the roofsigns are smaller than the taxi ones.

Incidentaly the reason that hardly any PH were tested was due to the council only having 2 of the promised 6 police motor bike riders available. Had to take the easy option of looking at the taxi ranks.

Does any one know how many thousands of cabs there are in yokel world?

At a guess I would say they have about 171.

Which makes the % stopped similar to the % stopped in B&H.
