I hope she gets off - it's entirely reasonable for her not to have the money considering that she thought the journey a short one, and she may well have reasonably considered that there might be money at the house she was going to.

On the information we're provided surely the case hasn't been proved beyond 'all reasonable doubt'.

Don't forget in Scotland we also have the 'not proven' verdict, perfect for this one

I agree but I fail to see how using Sat Nav makes someone crap taxi driver then again it probably depends on your prejudice at this point.

Again, I think this is probably the crux of the matter - if a taxi driver can't deal with a one letter error in an address a couple of miles away and indeed has to rely on sat-nav for such an address in the first place then he's either a newbie or has little common sense, particularly since he's apparently part of a circuit.

I'm not saying that it's necessarily all the driver's fault (since if the LA let's untrained drivers loose then to that extent it's their fault), but having to use Sat-nav making a driver crap (as you claim) isn't what I said per se, it has to be seen in context - if it had been a huge city or a twenty mile joureny then it might have been more excusable, but as it is it looks like a crap service to me.

I mean, recently I did a £25 fare which should have been about £10, but it wasn't my fault because the passenger told me the wrong address (it wasn't thier fault either because they had been given the wrong address).

But did you discount the fare and would you have called the police and had them charged if they had refused to pay?

I didn't feel obliged to discount it because it wasn't my fault - as it was I did in fact reduce it slightly (it metered at £28 or so) because I felt sorry for them because it wasn't thier fault either.

But if they had refused to pay what I asked then of course I would have called the police because the inflated fare wasn't my fault.

On the other hand, and with not a little irony, last night I set off in the wrong direction for a street that I knew well, and the fare came to £5.50 rather than the normal £4. So of course I only charged the normal £4 because it was entirely my fault.
