A STUDENT charged almost £25 for a £5 taxi journey has been told she won't face criminal charges - thanks to the Sunday Mail.

Heather McCartney was due to stand trial at Ayr District Court after failing to pay the £24.80 fare.

But after reading our story about her plight, Ayr Black Taxis Association stepped in to help get the charges dropped.

Heather, 21, of Girvan, had hired the taxi to take her from Ayr Hospital to her cousin's house in the town, a journey of less than four miles.

Driver Shaun Granger's sat-nav didn't recognise the address and Heather couldn't direct him.When she arrived she didn't have the money. She learned charges had been dropped last week.

She said: "I can't tell you what a relief it is.



"I was dreading it - particularly if I had been convicted of fraud. I wouldn't be able to go to America to work because of that conviction."


Her lawyer Peter Lockhart said: "After the Sunday Mail highlighted what had happened I received a phone call from the secretary of the Ayr Black Taxis Association.


"He said the girl should never have been charged that amount and that he would be willing to appear as a defence witness. As a result the Crown decided to drop the charge."

See, it just goes to show real TAXI drivers can be really good guys, and apply a common sense attitude. You cannot overcharge passengers, because you don't know where to go. The original driver should have declined the job, if he did not know where to go. Remind me to stay oot of Scottish taxi's though, please.

Right then, Mr Sussex. I visit your parish, and approach your taxi, and ask you to take me to Yazzoo Avenue.
Do you,

A. Tell me to come back when I am sober.

B. Drive me around in circles, take me back to where we started from and demand £25.

C. Call your office, find out it does not exist and tell me to come back when I am sober.

D. Rely on a satnav that requires 256mg of memory (about the same as a goldfish) to take me to a place that it had already told you does not exist? (in it's memory, because any street newer than this millenium is not programmed in?)

E. Say sorry luv, I have lived here all my life, and that street name does not ring any bells in my vast memory. (however, do you mean LORIEN, rather than LOREN, because I know exactly where that is!)?

Because this is the life of a REAL TAXI driver, it happens every day.

The only implausibility about this story is that a TAXI driver could mess up in such a manner. It MUST have been a PH driver.

I expect it does happen everyday, and some of the time real cab drivers get it wrong.

But what if your experienced guess is wrong and you take them, by mistake, to the wrong address?

Yes, I think I'll start asking my customers to spell their destination to the letter, and if they are even one letter out then I'll bump up the fare by £20.
