In so far as the accuracy of the meter was concerned the judge stated the driver is entitled to charge what is displayed on his meter, If the driver is going to charge less, say, half the rate allowed in the table of fares, then half the rate is what the passenger will expect to see on the meter.

So you're saying that a driver can't discount from the current tariff unless his discounted tariff is shown on the meter?

Interesting - I haven't read the case but I'd always assumed it was permissable to discount without it showing on the meter or even using the meter at all.

on a personal level I think all cabs should charge the same amount, but as you say, offer a discount from there on. It makes more sense.

Surely the meter has to be used except on a quoted fare?

Well what I mean is that if you are doing a £4 job (on the official tariff) for an agreed £3 then you could either activate the meter which will show £4 but you charge £3, or not bother with the meter.

I suppose the one argument to the contrary of what you suggest and what the judge said is that how does the customer know they're getting a discount?

Well like many other aspects of the process there's certainly scope for abuse (which is probably why skippy41's LA won't let him run without the meter or have the meter set at a lower tariff), but the scenario I had in mind was when both are aware that a discounted fare is to be charged.

If someone offers me a price then clearly their understanding is that it's less than the metered price, and obviously it's up to me whether I agree to do it.

But on occassion I've been offered more than the metered rate, with the punter clearly labouring under the misapprehension that it's under the metered rate, in which case, being the conscientious type, I would inform them of this. O:)

But I daresay some drivers would just accept the offer at the inflated rate. [-X

I'd be interested to see they're response if skippy puts the judgement to them and then submits his own farecard under the metered rate and then allows his meter to be tested by them.
