HEADLINE: Un-fare treatment?

A TAXI driver who waited in an ASDA disabled bay for two minutes while a customer put his shopping in the car has been hit with a £20 fine.

Private hire driver Yunus Haji said last Friday he went to pick up customer David Griffin, who was standing next to a disabled bay.

He said he left the engine running while Mr Griffin put his shopping in the boot.

He said: "The parking attendant came up and I told him I was just there to pick up a customer and would be gone in a minute. He said, 'you should follow the rules' and he got his computer out and gave me a ticket."

Mr Haji was ordered to pay the £20 fine within 10 days or it would rise to £40.

He spoke to the store manager who said there was nothing she could do to help.

An ASDA spokesperson said: "We take misuse of our disabled parking pays seriously and have a responsibility to keep them clear for disabled customers. On this occasion the taxi driver used the disabled parking space to collect a passenger and that is why he received a ticket. An area of the car park has been allocated for taxis to collect their fares."
