Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.

Please dont call me orange, with me being a nice polite catholic sort, who never misses mass on a Sunday.

The word 'politics' is derived from the word 'poly', meaning 'many', and the word 'ticks', meaning 'blood sucking parasites'.

I must say that we formed a union branch a couple of years ago, with the TGWU Cab Section.

We attended meetings with Labour Councillors who supported trades Unions.

We forced issue with the council over the deregulation of numbers, who agreed to have a review.

We petitioned our local councillors and won their support.

A review committee was formed and our Branch Chairman informed me that the Union were sending an expert up from London to put forward our case.

The review concluded that no change was required.

Some time later I had reason to talk to the chairman of that review committee (as he is a Ward Councillor of mine) and he asked why I had not spoken on behalf of my members. When I advised him that the person who had spoke was an expert in his field he said that he had no knowledge of Gateshead and a lot of people on that committee had commented on his right to come here and tell them how to legislate for taxis.

You see, some Councillors are aspiring politicians and will toe the party line at any cost. The majority though are people who want to try and make their area better and join a political party to give them a opportunity to do just that.

The power within local authorities lies with the latter but pressure is placed upon them by the former who only wish to fulfil their political ambitions.

That is why, when it comes to representation Local Associations are best suited to negotiating a better future for the trade ........................ and, I suppose, that's the reason you feel you need to fight in order to achieve.

Since adopting the NTA's approach .............. and after accepting support from an excellent Regional Group, a first class administration officer and some scouse bloke   we have achieved where the unions failed.

Negotiate.....Debate......Success

But I fear the same principles.

Unions look after individuals ................. if your a member then your OK.

I'm sick of hearing what you claim to have achieved, which basically amounts to compensation for individual members.

You also talk about benefits of membership to include financial savings through buying from certain suppliers. In the real world discounts are available on most things if it is requested, I get trade prices on everything connected with my vehicle from all the local suppliers.

What I want to see is progression and change ............... I want the opportunity to make more money and be assured of a future.

While your fighting councils to force an issue which will benefit only your members, I'll work with mine to implement fair policies for ALL.

And if mutual respect and trust is gained, you'll be well served for what lies store in the future.
