Eight seater taxi buses are being pushed here all the time, but up to now none have been implemented, it would seem the reason they are being pushed, is to save money that is being lost by subsidising regular bus services, in other words they cocked up with the Buses and are trying to save money by cocking up taxis, it is also interesting that Mersey Travel are also trying to introduce a training scheme for taxi drivers

Stagecoach tried and failed with their Yellow Taxibuses both here in Edinburgh and in Petersfield Hants.
See http://business.scotsman.com/topics.cfm?tid=539&id=1954492005

If THEY can't make them make money, then it's obvious that without subsidy they won't be able to. I notice also that the Royal Mail have been withdrawing their Postbuses services in some areas.

That's not to say the taxi trade should become complacent about exteral threats.

I think there are many big firms out there that think our trade is a piece of p*** and they can make big bucks out of it, or wish they could.

But the reality is the legislation hampers the big guys taking over.

Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody (Crewe and Nantwich) (Lab): I am grateful to the Minister for allowing me to intervene so early. Given that we are so keen on the safety of drivers and that we are introducing so many sensible amendments, will he explain why there is no discussion of pedicabs, which are highly dangerous, yet seem to be of no concern to anyone? It is quite possible, if one is bored with someone, to put them in a pedicab.

been speaking to the ph lad who went to the enquirey.
the tuks tuks bloke said he has spent £80,000 so far on maintaining the 12 tuk tuks he has.
they were meant to have 8 running. two in reserve. and two being maintained at anyone time.
got a firm in the midkands to do the servicing.
becuase they are aways broken that firm is permantly based in brighton marina.
hence the 80 grand.
when the tuk tuks go up hill they lose 50% of their power. as the fuel they use isnt up to it.
mr tuk tuk and his dad and brother all had masonioc rings on.
maybe to try and influence the commissioner. [-X
but they didnt have any tax on their merc.

If these people had applied for licenses with WAV's I can imagine this site would have viewed this all very differently.

Good SUD though

Its not clear what you mean, the accusation against this company was that PSV licence conditions were being abused? What does WAV have to do with it?

I noticed the £80K spent

You could get a couple or three WAV's for that, if the guy had spent it on those and challenged the LA decision to limit, then he would have been looked upon differently.

CC

It is not a prerequisite to purchase a wav or any other type of vehicle in order to challenge a licensing decision.

If Mr Tuc Tuc wanted to run the same system by way of section 12 of the 1985 act all he need do is apply for a hackney carriage license under section 16 and run it as a bus. Because of Brightons Hackney carriage policy he would still have to go court and put his case as to why the council should issue him a license under section 16.

Yesterday took the Brighton Bovver Boy and one other member to meet
Cllr Simon Burgess leader of Brighton Council to discuss Tuk Tuks amongst other issues. It was clear that he was not aware of the lack of crim checks or medicals,we pointed out the many failings of these contraptions and the possible recriminations for the Council, this he took most seriously. He suggested that as a novelty allowing them too travel up and down the sea front in the summer might be acceptable, but that the current situation was not good practice. So it would appear that the campaign to rid the streets of these monstrosities now has a powerful ally.We will be meeting again in 6 weeks to be updated.
