Cabbies see red as taxis turn silver

SILVER-COLOURED taxis will be the only cars allowed to pick up passengers from the rank, if councillors approve plans.

The move - blasted as "a waste of time" by one cabbie - would also see Welwyn Hatfield Council's crest emblazoned across both rear doors and a maroon stripe the entire length of the car.

Private hire vehicles, which only pick up booked fares, will all have to be dark blue.

The changes, which have already been adopted in other parts of the country, will affect all new vehicles licensed from April 1.

Drivers will have to pay for the council stickers themselves.

WGC taxi driver Gloria Pond said she would consider giving up the trade if the plans are enforced.

She said: "I don't agree with it at all. The council is just trying to take over everybody.

"I couldn't sell a car with a stripe down it and a crest on the side, it would mark the car."

Hatfield resident Sandie Goodwin, who is the editor of Taxi Globe, a trade magazine for London's black cab drivers, said the issue was an extremely controversial one.

She said: "From a licensing point of view it probably makes things easier, but for the taxi driver it really makes a difference when they come to sell them.

"For the public it's great. They know they are getting into a licensed vehicle."

The council's chief legal officer Bob Baldock told the WHT that the introduction of coloured cars was an issue of safety.

"If vehicles are easily identified as a hackney carriage or private hire and relate to a certain district then people consider that they are safer than an unmarked vehicle."

The plans will be discussed at the environment overview and scrutiny committee tomorrow (Thursday) from 7.30pm.

If agreed the plans will go forward to cabinet for approval before implementation.

lol. Does this person mean that only hackney carriage vehicles can pick up at a Taxi rank? I thought that had always been the case? Or does he mean, only Silver hackney carriages can pick up at a rank?

This one has me stumped?

Now this girl speaks my language but I think captain cab might need an interpreter? lol

Another unsatisfied council customer. Divest councils of Taxi licensing, its the only answer to all these problems.

I've founded a new acronym called PCM, it stands for Politically Correct Morons.

I have heard on the old grapevine City of York taxis in the near future will be Black in colour with full Council Logo on each side and be limited to v reg, no earlier, this is so the public can tell they are taxis,

Look it's a licensed vehicle, people are entitled to know that a taxi is a taxi. Would she rather people got into un-licensed vehicles?

As for the effect on the selling price, yeah the colour is going to make a big difference to a motor that has done 250,000 miles.

What gets me is if silver can ply for hire and blue cannot, surely people will think when they cant get a silver car...well at least the blue ones licensed.

or is that just me being thick?
