Two-wheeled taxi fills gap in market
It's a taxi – but not as we know it. Leyland biker has become the first in Lancashire to be granted a private hire licence – for a motorbike!
Ray Borg, 48, was granted the licence by South Ribble Council to offer trips on the back of his £17,000 Honda Gold Wing motorcycle.

The father-of-two, from Canberra Road, will offer trips to the Lake District, Ribble Valley and further afield, charging up to £120 an hour.

Ray, a self-employed training consultant, has had the touring bike specially adapted to take passengers and spent hundreds of pounds on safety equipment.

He has also bought several luxury items for customers, including two-way radios, waterproofs and a heated jacket for the winter months.

Customers will also receive a full safety briefing before setting off.

Ray was inspired to set up 'Goldwing Rides UK' after hearing of a similar company in Windermere. Motorcycle taxis are commonly used in London by commuters who wish to avoid the rush-hour queues.

Ray, a keen biker since 1993, describes his special-edition vehicle, as the "Rolls Royce of touring,"

He said: "I decided to give it a go as there was a gap in the market. Because I'm self-employed it also means I can pick and choose dates when I'm available to work."

He got the green light from South Ribble Council on Tuesday.
Coun Tony Kelly, chairman of the licensing committee, said: "We are satisfied the applicant is an experienced rider who has taken an advanced driving test and has the highest qualification awarded by the Institute of Advanced Motorcyclists.

"His vehicle is designed for long distance driving and passengers will be equipped with protective clothing, a suitable crash helmet and a passenger intercom system."

I know this guy is at least doing it legally, but considering LA's insist on certain degrees of passenger safety, you have to wonder about this.

I mean, we have LA's who insist on wheelchairs being secure, pushchairs being secure, luggage being secure, yet this one (along with allerdale) license a motorbike!
