I would but then I wouldn't be able to find a driver for it.

I've been offering £400 a week for a taxi driver for thelast three months with no takers. I have a waiting list of potential chauffeurs who are willing to work for £300.00 a week.

I find that rather difficult to believe and a tad contridictory.

If you have a waiting list why dont you ask them to apply for a PH drivers license? I presume these drivers have clean driving licenses and clean criminal records?

How much is the cost of a license?

I have asked them to apply but they don't want to know. Cann't say i blame them really who needs the agro and the expense. In monmouth the licence cost £150, the crb another £40 and the medical is about £100.00.

Sadly taxi driving does not have the best of reputations as a career option. My view is that the trade needs to stop bickering amongst itself and start to promote itself as a good quality employment option.

fortunately not all employers are as stupid as union reps.

I pay my chauffeur £10.00 an hour and the working week is between 30and 35. He doesn't work Sundays and he has another full day off in the week.

There are some ethical employers around the sooner this left wing rabble are got rid of from government the sooner we can get back to operating profitable businesses that produce real jobs.

It appears that we are heading towards a major upturn in unemployment hence the plans for the government to keep people in school until 18. Keeps the unemployment figures down. We deperately need another dose of thatcherism to encourage enterprise again.

I'm surprised you get any work at all with a £225 minimum charge

umm lets see.....

four people going to London return train fare from Cardiff £160.00 per person plus waiting around on platforms and delays, etc

or

£350 for four people in a top of the range merc with pick up from home and drop off and pick up at shops and restaurants etc and delivered back home to the door.

£350.00 seems a bargain to me :)

Sorry - I thought it was a typo and I was just pulling your leg.

But if you're doing a run from Cardiff to London, waiting around a few hours and then taking them back all for £350 then £225 as a minimum seems on the high side?

I thought a minimum for a motor like that would be something around the ton mark, but then again I've led a sheltered existance?

Would you charge that kind of dosh for a local wedding, for example?

Well i'm not going to charge £2.50 for a ride in a £50,000+ car with a tri-lingual uniformed driver, laptop workstation and power points, complimentary cool drink bar ..........

As in all things in life, you get what you pay for :)

I would be very careful though fella about providing a complimentary cool drinks bar as , yep you guessed it you need a licence for that too. Unlesss of course you already have 1 then please disregard my post. Oh and by the way this is clearly not the case if all your supplying is soft drinks

Hi TDO

I've priced for the type of work that I want. I don't really want short runs or half day jobs so I intentiaonally price myself out of that side of the market.

I am looking at doing weddings next year, but i'm not too sure about it at the moment because week day weddings will interfere with my corporate work and saturday weddings will interfere with my sporting event work.

current prices for a nice wedding car in this area is £800 for a full day and £500 for a half day. But this is for a nice car with the ribbons and flowers.

I am looking at the possibility of getting a beufort car for this (classic look a like) and you should be able to get about £600 for a half day and £1000 for a full day.

Kermit

I only supply soft drinks. We offer locally produced organic apple and pear juices and also local spring waters.

Thanks for your reply, by the way i think i might just have to move my business up your way as with prices like that for weddings is really quite incredible, we are only able to quote about £160 to £220 for half a day with a limo and possibly a little more for a beaufort

Kermit,

I'm amazed you can only get a little more than 220 for a beaufort on a half day rental.

most owners are charging between £300 - £400 for a 3 hour hire period. That gives you 3 hire periods on a day - morning, afternoon and evening. so you could easily charge £1,000 for a full day hire.

One of the great things about living in the country is that there isn't the competition around that you get in the city. However you also need to provide a much higher level of service because word gets around very quickly if you don't. That means opening the doors for passengers, it means going up and knocking on the door instead of parking outside and blowing your horn etc.

However if you do provide the service and are courtious and realistically priced (monmouth meter prices are in the lower half of the league table) then you can make a very good living. I am booking up solid from 4.00pm this afternoon until 5.00am tomorrow morning and most Saturdays if you don't book by Wednesday you don't get a car from me.

There are taxi drivers in Monmouth who are not as busy mainly becasue they smoke in the car, drive very fast, pip horns at passengers and generally are your stereotypical rude taxi driver.

You get out of this trade what you put into it. Treat it as a dead end job to do in between jobs and you'll get nothing out of it.

Your right about the cities Kevin, There are about 10 companies competing for the business down here, but thats better than last year when there was about 15. I also agree about the service levels too :D

Well credit where its due if your paying £10 an hour and your boys work 30 -35 hrs a week good very different in London, here drivers clear less than £3.80 an hour at some companies. If you think this lots left wing i must doubt your sanity.Fact Thatcher did more damage to this country than Hitler.Still were starting to turn this New Lab left then we will see some action!
