Lincoln Chronicle 22/11/2006

A woman taxi driver fought off a knife attacker in an attempted robbery in Lincoln on Tuesday.
The incident happened on Charlesworth Street at about 1:45 am when the taxi driver, who is in her 50's pulled up at Foss Bank to collect a fare.
A man approached the vehicle and threatened the woman with a knife.
A struggle took place during which the knife was dropped and the man ran off in the direction of Foss Bank towards the City Centre. He is described as white, 18-22, slim, about 5ft 8ins tall, and wore a dark hoodie jumper with a white checked shirt underneath, jeans and gloves.
Anyone with information should contact Det Sgt Pete Grayson at Lincoln CID on 882222, quoting incident 10 of November 21.

Call me old fashioned but I don't think 50 year old women should be driving cabs at nearly 2am

Whats your view then of 35 year old females driving cabs at that time of night? We all have to earn a living - but we take things like this in our stride. i was raped in September by a passenger and I still drive nights - and this person will rot in supposed hell until i find him again and then he will know what hell really is! And yes he did have a knife and no it didn't make even the local papers because its apparently "expected because of what we do" We are treated in the same way as tarts and hookers - out there for one thing!

Next time you hear - "tango" "13" "99" "female driver" just get THERE!!!!

I think the police are the best people to deal with this issue Mrs Tigger, and I'm not sure what you expect this forum to say about what happened to you.

Other than it must have been a horrible event, and TBH I'm amazed you are still in the trade.

Tigger, it was a terrible thing that happened to you, but I think we can see you're not going to let the basstard win, so good on you girl, and any time you want to come on here and have a go, do so, especially if it is at Sussex... or me...love mr T

I have had 3 or 4 female drivers work fri/sat night in my time running taxis, got to say they have been amongst the best money pullers. I have no qualms sending them out there at weekends. Just as capable and in many cases less problems than some of the guys iv had drive over the last few years.

ps never had a female driver yet pull out of a shift at the last minute due to "babysitting problems" yet its the most popular with the men :?

Thanks Guys - I really didn't mean that to come out like it did but your support is greatly appreciated. I'm staying in the trade because its how I support my kids and no one or nothing is ever going to stop that. I thought my post might have been removed but all credit to Alex for leaving it there as it is something that is real and something that we don't think about when we take onthis job but when it happens it has a far greater effect than anyone can over imagine.

I'll NEVER give up my cab its a part of me; its as much a part of me as my kids and my tattoos etc. and no one will ever take that away from me.

I hole heartedly apologise for my outburst in my initial post on this thread but now you all know you will appreciate how I felt. Like most women out there I am only trying to earn a living in the only way that I know how - and in the only way that can support my kids; I don't know how my lad will be from day to day and its only with the understanding of others who cover my work that I can carry on. Yes being female is hard but then again there are some hard females out there. If I ever need help I really hope one of you is close by.
