The consideration of which sections to target is quite straightforward. You can either concentrate on an area that has a potential readership of over two hundred thousand or an area that is limited to approximately 45 thousand? The majority of the Taxi trade outside of London are not remotely interested in what goes on inside of London unless it has a direct bearing on them. Obviously there will always be some stories that have a national interest but I suspect Taxi Today in most cases would always report those types of stories?

On the other side of the coin you will be hard pressed to find a London Taxi magazine publishing stories that relate to the provinces. Taxi today has the potential of becoming the most popular and most read Taxi magazine in the whole of the United kingdom. One of the reasons that is so is because it makes a point of offering content that people in England, Scotland and Wales can relate but it also has the potential to diversify into other fields without incurring additional costs.

In the main the only drawback in the publication costs of any magazine is revenue, whether it be obtained from advertising or subsrciption? Targetting those persons who actively wan't to read the magazine each month is in most cases far better for advertisers than perhaps distributing thousands of copies that might only be read at a glance?

I suppose to be successful every Magazine must have four basic elements.

If a magazine is free then it will need regular and dedicated suport from advertisers to keep it afloat. Advertisers will only advertise in your magazine if they can see an advantage in doing so? More advertising revenue in many cases will lead to increased circulation, therefore a potential wider audience for advetisers?

National distribution cost is another of the four elements. Organising a distribution chain with minimal costs is no easy task.

Content is yet another of the four factors because without good and varied content both advertisers and readers, might be turned off.

Perhaps the most important element is finding a dedicated and knowledgeable team who you can trust to bring these elements together and not withstanding the fact that you would also need to have an exeptional advertising sales person and a reliable and reasonably priced printer.

Regards

JD

GA for a tenner a year you can subscribe and be on the first mailing out each month of the mag...!! [hard copy] royal mail.

or you can download the mag from here or the website.
you can register at the website www.Press Cuttings Monthly.com
just enter your email address and nothing else and its emailed out to you as a free download each month.

we have a database of 7.500 email addresses of drivers and owners who we email to each month. cost me a packet to obtain it...!!
we are the only mag as far as im aware to not only directly mail out but also move into emailing aswell.

the mag as to be produced anyway, so all i ask of our design studio is give me a low res copy after the mag is finished and its sent out.
there's no print costs or mailing costs and it increases the readership
in December i believe it was downloaded in excess of over 6.000 times but i have been told that its also forwarded on but i cant track where or how many download it from being forwarded on.

also GA lets say for example we had something on the conditions of fitness a piece written and sent in opposing the conditions of fitness and one for it then i'd put them on either the same page or opposite pages depending on how big the articles were.

i'm all for opposing points of views, thats where the other mags fall down.
its either you agree with the editor or you go in the mag and get ridiculed.

my idea is to put opposing views in there and let the readers decide which point they agree with. it gives them the opportunity to get all the facts hopefully so they can decide for themselves.

JD your absolutely correct in what you say. as i said earlier the cost to the mag in December in mailing out hard copies direct to offices and drivers was at 55pence each approx £9,900 yes nine thousand nine hundred squid
on top of that we have the bulk drops at say a basic price of £9 inc vat costs £850 you can see we are now around £11000 before print costs, office and design etc.

the distribution will if done by direct mailing always be the biggest expense.
the print isnt a problem with the costs for a couple of reasons as Parklane Publishing have got that part sewn up for me as they have good bargaining power and ties.

without being big headed i know most if not all on good terms and have a very good working relationship with them all.
so theres only myself who as any contact with the advertisers, hence i know whats going on and who's doing what. and this stops a 3rd party ie: an emlpoyee damaging that relationship by saying or doing something stupid.
which does happen sometimes.

so yes JD the fact that if all those things were brought together then who knows what could be achieved.

i dont take any income from the mag,
all i take from the mag is vehicle lease per month and running costs such as fuel and insurance etc.

my other intrests pay my wages etc so the mag isnt milked or used as a pay cow for other stuff like another publication that i could mention...!!

For the record the December edition was downloaded over a 1000 times from this site.

May I ask who I send the bill for the bandwidth to? :D
