If someone wants to join a union, then what does it matter to you?

In some respects our trade would be better off if many more drivers joined a union or association.

Two main reasons they don't is down to them not being bothered, and many unions/associations not being worth a toss.

Not exactly an earth shattering comment that the GMB give money to a Labour government. :?

I doubt there are many members who don't know that, even if they don't like it.

As for the racist issue, I think most, if not all, on here know what a racist is and what they say. Thus don't need anyone to remind them.

If they live here and want to be a member YES, why not, I would have thought that as the EC expands there will be a lot more non UK Europeans joining UK unions.

I just hope you explained to your English members, who you are supposed to represent, that EU drivers can obtain a licence without having to provide the same standard of CRB checks..... or is that just a technicality.....

And that Eastern Europeans are willing to work for less money ........... minimum wage is like a lottery win for some of these blokes.

A great advert for the GMB.

Surely if these 'heathens' from the new bits of the EU join a union then they are more likely to get a better rate from their new bosses. And if they don't join a union they are likely to undercut the existing trade even more.

But the problem isn't of the GMB or any other unions making, it's down to the 'powers that be' that set the rules.

Drivers should have a checkable past of note, but we are where we are, and I would have thought this trade would have a better chance of changing things with all the unions and association fighting the same battle, not one another.

General Municipal & Boilermakers, happy now Rich 4?
Of course we welcome immigrant workers into membership, because then they wont work for less than the going rate or the minimum wage.
Many of our members would put some contributors to site to shame. No they wont allow themselves to be cheated by unscrupolus emploters, no they dont CRY fact of life they organise. They will not be exploited, and of course WE assist them with education in OUR language. Unorganised they would be a threat to our standards. So b y organising them we are of course protecting the indigenous working population. Hardly NEWS we contribute to the Labour Party, this procedure is of course subject to regular ballots and members have the right to opt out, funnily enough its normally those from the left that do.Rich 4 must say that after reading your post must say what a fine example of the illiterate you are, you must be proud? NOW IS IT THERE OR THEIR???????????
ORGANISE EDUCATE EDUCATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr T and GA you really are a COUPLE OF SAD INDIVIDUALS, as far as I am concerned people are people, wherever they come from. If people comply with the current rules end of. If you are unhappy lobby your union, council, MP, that is your option. Personally I would rather have the GMB represent these people and get a fair deal for them.

I see you conveniently forget about your existing members, but what the hell, you will make more from people coming in from abroad....

I think the main point is that any applicant, be they of UK origin or from elsewhere in the world should all fit the same criteria and be qualified to drive and do the job.

There are distinct worries about the validity of the Certificates of Good Conduct and these need addressed.

Speaking reading and writing in English is more or less essential for a Hackney Carriage Driver.

However, just say I was of Bengali origin and I wanted to operate a service for the Bengali community....I wonder if the same barriers would be needed?
