Taxi driver found guilty of raping passenger

Murtaza MateenA TAXI driver has been found guilty of raping a woman he was supposed to be driving home.

Murtaza Mateen, 47, of Lime Crescent, Old Trafford, was convicted of rape following a four-day trial at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court.

The 42-year-old victim accepted a lift from Mateen after he pulled up as she was walking along Manchester Road, in Partington, on June 11 last year.

He then drove the woman a short distance before locking all the doors of his car and raping her.

The woman managed to get out of the vehicle and raised the alarm when she eventually got home.

Mateen was caught after police traced the taxi from CCTV footage from the scene of the crime.

'Devastating'

DNA evidence also linked him to the rape.

Mateen was arrested on suspicion of rape and charged three days later.

Detective Constable Alison Barber, from Trafford CID, who led the investigation, said: "This crime has had a devastating effect on the woman's life.

"I can only hope that the guilty verdict will bring some sort of comfort to her that the offender has been convicted and will remain behind bars."

Sentencing has been adjourned until January 26.

Doesn't say where he was licensed? The area where this occured is rather isolated in parts.

I think the headline states Manchester, the article was from the Manchester Evening News website.

But is also states Trafford, so it could be a case of Manchester meaning North Lancashire.

Well he won't get a license again. It was CCTV that caught him out it and just goes to show the importance of CCTV yet many councils won't let cabbies use it?

It says Taxi driver, but given the lack of intelligence of the press it could equally have been a PH driver, irrespective of this, or where he was licenced, this women put her trust in a licenced driver and was raped, he needs his balls pulling off and feeding to him

There are several districts close to Partington that use cars as hackneys but it could be either. I'll try and find out over the weekend.
